The WMS 7/8 Wrestling Knights split at HOME Tuesday evening, their only HOME EVENT and their last "regular season" event as the end of season, Patriot League Championships are on slate for this Saturday in Mulvane.
At WMS Tuesday, the Knights went up against a buzz-saw team, Augusta who are now 12-0 on the season...a fine group of wrestlers. The Knights came up short 71-12 but found redemption vs Haysville West in the nightcap, winning 66-18.
The Wellington Crusader Wrestlers hosted their annual Varsity Invitational Saturday with 14 teams in total on scene. Those teams varied in size though. The Crusaders had only "4" wrestlers in action on the day, still managing to finish 9th out of 14 teams with 3 of the 4 medaling. Here are the individual and team results from Saturday's action.
It was Round #2 Thursday evening of this week's CHENEY TOURNAMENT which will culminate in Cheney this Saturday. The (2-0) JV Girls continued their winning ways from Tuesday's action in Chaparral, downing the JV Lady Greenbacks 57-44. The (1-1) Varsity Lady Crusaders ran into a hot shooting, fast moving group of girls who eventually pulled away from the home-town team for a 58-39 victory.

Coach Aguilar introduced all the players, presented each with their appropriate letters, bars, etc...special mention was given to each SENIOR present - a fun evening for all - a proud evening for Crusaders.

For those that might not know, Patriot League Wrestling scheduled the sport earlier this school year. Before, wrestling at the middle school level didn't commence until mid-late January. After a 30 minute intrasquad practice, the Lady Crusaders had a couple dozen or so younger WRC basketball girls join them at their Saturday morning session at Wellington High School. The combined group conducted dribbling and shooting drills, fun for both groups, and the coaches. Check out a few pics below that were taken at the event. The basketball season at WHS gets underway in December! Exciting!
Younger Wellington boys’ basketball players (WRC) joined the Crusader Boys Basketball team Thursday, for some work on fundamentals and more…you can see from the pics, lots of smiles on lots of faces…looks like all the “kids” (HS & younger) had a great time. This year the boy’s program has a new head coach, Mr. Joe Newman, a WHS graduate from earlier this century and coached the last several years at Belle Plaine, where he and the Dragons found considerable success.
The Wellington High School Commons was full of "signings" Monday afternoon! Seniors Jacelyn Buck, Brooke McCorkle, and Delaney Parkey, all signed on the dotted line and will be playing softball in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Bethel next year (respectively). Congratulations to ALL 3 and their families and friends and fans!!
An Awards/Pep Assembly was held Friday afternoon at WHS, achievements in Girls Tennis, Girls Golf, Cross Country, and Volleyball were duly noted. It's been a great FALL for the Crusaders and Lady Crusaders - across the board. The IRONDUKES were honored as well with Senior Chi Barton addressing and thanking many that are close to the program. The Cheerleaders, the Crimson Dancers, the Band, and A.D. Luke Smith as MC, kept the crowd fired up - Spirit is HIGH @ WHS
The remarkable 2018 Crusader Football season ended on Friday night at Sellers Park, the 4th game in a row at Sellers Park, against the Goddard Lions. Final score: Goddard 28 Wellington 14.
Payton Ginter was named to the 2018 4A 2nd Team All State for Girls Golf!
It was Crusaders vs Crusaders and it went down to the wire...the Wellington Crusaders emerged as Regional 4A Champions Friday evening at Sellers Park, playing host to the Buhler Crusaders, final score Buhler 7 Wellington 14. Our Irondukes move on, Buhler is done for the season.
Chase Pfalzgraf and Mackenzie Heacock, qualified last weekend in Chanute for today's (Saturday) State 4A Cross Country Meet in Wamego! A big sendoff took place on Wednesday for Chase and Mackenzie (2 days early due to PT Conferences/No School) out at WHS. Unfortunate news was received today prior to the conclusion of the State Meet that Jr. Mackenzie Heacock had rolled her ankle Friday evening and would not be able to compete on Saturday. Not the outcome you want at a State event for sure.
The Crusaders downed Rose Hill Friday evening at Sellers Park, 38-13 in week #9 bracketed action. The boys in "Crusader Red" will advance and HOST Buhler Friday @ 7PM, who downed Winfield 25-0, ending the season for the Vikings at 3-6.
For the 2nd time in about as many weeks, a STATE 4A sendoff took place at WHS, this time for Cross Country runners Senior Chase Pfalzgraf and Junior Mackenzie Heacock. Chase and Mackenzie both qualified for the State 4A Meet at Wamego this Saturday. Action gets underway at 11AM at the Wamego Country Club. Many students, staff, the awesome Crusader Band, and others were on hand in support!
The 2018 WHS Volleyball Season came to a close on Saturday @ Rose Hill HS. 4A Sub-State action vs Nickerson didn't produce the "W" needed to advance - the Lady Crusader underclassmen will say good-bye to the courts until the 2019 season rolls around - 7 Seniors will say good-bye forever. It's always difficult when season's end, especially for the graduating Seniors. Saw several recent graduates at Sub-State 4A action in Rose Hill - the ladies have a love for the game and as their predecessors, they will be missed.
Congratulations to SR. CHASE PFALZGRAF and JR. MACKENZIE HEACOCK, both have qualified for the STATE 4A MEET in Wamego (Country Club) next weekend. Chase finished 7th in the Boys 5K, Mackenzie finished 10th in the Girls 5K (her personal best time, bettering her time on the All-Time Best List @ WHS where she remains "1st" on the list.)
The 4A Brackets are out for playoff action (see link below) which will begin Friday. Turns out, the loss to Mulvane did nothing to alter the outcome for who we would play this coming Friday. The Crusaders went in as #2 seed, likely to face #15 seed Rose Hill week #9, and emerged as the #2 seed and will play Rose Hill this coming Friday HERE, despite the loss to the Wildcats who end up the #4 seed. This will perhaps catch the attention of a couple of Mulvane players who while exiting the field were letting the crowd know they were the #2 seed now.** Oops.
Results are in - congratulations to WHS Sophomore Payton Ginter who finished 13th Tuesday (just 1 stroke out of top 10) at the weather-delayed State 4A Girls Golf Tournament in Hutchinson. Payton had an 89 on the day, 18 over par. Wichita Trinity's Hanna Hawks finished 1st @ 68, 3 under. Awesome job ladies!!
"91" girls participated in and finished the tournament.
Congratulations to WHS Girls Tennis members Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk...these 2 young ladies almost won it all at the State 4A Girls Tennis Tournament in Topeka today. There were 19 teams represented at STATE and our Lady Crusaders as a team FINISHED 3rd!! Wichita Collegiate finished 1st, Topeka-Hayden 2nd.
A Sub-Varsity football game between Wellington and Winfield (Freshmen / Sophomores) played out at Sellers Park Monday evening. A bigger Winfield team dominated the first half. Final score pending.
All "4" Lady Crusader Tennis Players have advanced to Monday action at the State 4A Girls Tennis Tournament in Topeka.
Jacelyn Buck and Calli Hatfield, defeated Teufel/DeMeyer of Buhler to secure a spot on Monday. Jacelyn and Calli will need to win two more matches in order to play for 5th/6th place.
Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk are in the semi-finals, just two wins away from being State 4A Doubles Champions! Action resumes Monday - GO LADIES GO!!
Week 7 brought another victory to the Wellington Crusader Varsity Football squad. The boys in red road tripped east to Viking Land and returned home a few hours later with a 22 -7 win. The Crusaders were up 14-0 at halftime and soon thereafter, up just by 7. However, a fumble in the red zone by Winfield resulted in a Wellington TD with 2:30 left in the game to go up by 15. Game over. Penalties hurt the Vikings, 95 yards worth...Crusaders ended game with just 20 yds, the fewest this season.

"C" TEAM FOOTBALL vs Rose Hill Pics 100118
The Lady Crusaders were 2nd as a team for the second straight year at the AVCTL League Tournament! "All the girls stepped it up Monday and helped with the team", Coach Aufdengarten reports.
" #2 Doubles Natalie Henning and Olivia Brand got the 5 seed and upset Winfield in a third set super tiebreak 16-14. The pair then lost their next two and finished 4th overall. Very proud of these two, they have played singles most of the year and to finish in the top 4 in our league is awesome.
The IRONDUKES took their show on the road for the 3rd time this season and for the 3rd time, came HOME with a "W"! Now 4-1, the Crusaders downed (0-5) Rose Hill 38-7 in Friday night action at the Home of the Rockets.
The Freshman Lady Volleyball squad hosted Augusta, Buhler and Mulvane Thursday in "QUAD" action at WHS. The young ladies in red battled hard, going 1-2 on the evening, defeating Mulvane and coming up just short vs Augusta and Buhler - all "3" set matches.

The WMS 7/8 Girls Tennis team wrapped up "HOME" play Thursday at the 9th St. Courts vs Ark City Middle School - The Lady Knights dominated Ark City winning 11 matches against 2 losses. It was VOLLEYBALL action time Tuesday at WHS, the last home stand for the 2018 Lady Crusader Volleyball Squads. "7" Seniors and their parents were honored...this is a group that has played together a long time - very familiar faces that will be missed. Andale dominated the action on the courts, downing Wellington and Rose Hill, each in 2 sets. Rose Hill came out on top of Wellington in 2 sets also. In JV action, same outcomes.
Andale beat Wellington
The Wellington Knights hosted their invitational Tuesday afternoon at Hargis Creek Watershed. 9 other teams competed and close to 240 runners finished the race. Due to the much cooler weather, many runners ran their "personal bests".

The Varsity Lady Crusader Volleyball squad found success Saturday at the Cheney Tournament, finishing 2nd, behind the host.
For the 2nd time this season, the IRONDUKES were at HOME and the eventual outcome was good, but it took a while before Wellington could pull away from the visiting Orioles.
At halftime, WHS was up only 14-7. A strong 14 point 3rd qtr for the HOME team secured the cause, as its now 28-7. Augusta would score one more time in the 4th, so would Wellington. As the whistles blew, the game ended 35-14, the team in red could ring the bell!
It was POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL time at Sellers Park Thursday evening, following the great parade and great rally downtown! The SOPHOMORES took care of business, scoring 82 points on the evening and walked away with the big hardware!

The Crusaders got to taste the other end of an xx - 00 score this week, falling to the Andale Indians 28-00 at Sellers Park Friday evening. It was Youth Night, the stands were full of the Crusader faithful, and for the most part, the rains had ended. The field was quite saturated though and by games end, looked much like the tee area at a golf course driving range on 1/2 price day.
The 7th and 8th grade Lady Knight Volleyball squads, both "A" and "B", continued their winning ways at their HOME OPENERS Thursday at WMS vs the visiting Haysville Hawks. All "4" teams move to 2-0 on the season! Congratulations to all - check out the pics below, over 300!

Defending State 4A Volleyball Champion Rose Hill was too much to handle, this go-round for our Lady Crusaders...the Lady Rockets (in Triangular action at Rose Hill w/ Collegiate), downed the Varsity Lady Crusaders in 2 sets in the opening match, 11-25, 13-25. Varsity Wellington rallied in the nightcap vs Collegiate, winning in 3 sets, 25-20, 17-25, 25-9. It was "2" big W's for the JV Lady Crusaders, vs Rose Hill won in 3, 21-25, 25-12 , 15-10 and won in 2 vs Collegiate, 25-20, 25-7. Great job Ladies!
Coming off the BIG VARSITY WIN Friday night @ Collegiate (Final WHS 32 WCS 00), the JV Boys looked poised early to continue that trend, jumping out on the visiting Spartans 7-6 after 1 qtr of action. Unfortunately, miscues and mental errors in the end would tip the scale to Collegiate, who rode home in the rain with a 27-12 victory.

In an interview with Coach Aguilar, a few short weeks ago, he was upbeat and he even suggested what happened Friday night at Collegiate might very well happen. The Coaches are big on this group of Crusaders and Friday's results clearly shows why.

Head WHS Football Coach Zane Aguilar has spent about a quarter-century around football, and he's only in his early 30's! He loves the game, playing it and coaching it, and that becomes very clear after just a few minutes of dialogue with the Ironduke's CEO. Not only that, the guy can sing!
Student-athletes at WHS have been training all summer through PSQ, through camps, through special training - all to be as physically and mentally prepared as possible when Fall Sports Practices (Football, Volleyball, Girls Tennis, Cross Country, Girls Golf) begin. These pics were taken during HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING one morning last week, the training had moved inside for the day due to wet conditions outside...they train hard and they have fun.

Play resumed Monday morning after rain delay Sunday. Score didn't change and outcome was Liberal 9 DUKES 1. No matter, Wellington would be the #2 seed in Bracket Play after going 3-1 in Pool Play. Liberal, 4-0 in pool play, would be the #1 seed. In the first semi-final, it was DUKES vs Parsons, a team Wellington defeated in the State Tournament opener, 8-6. A repeat of that outcome wasn't to be.
The Wellington Dukes 18U lost to Parsons 3-6 in semi-final bracket play action this afternoon at Liberal's Sr. Babe Ruth State Tournament.
If you went to the concession stand in Liberal Saturday afternoon and had to wait very long, you probably missed the WELLINGTON vs HAVEN game at the Sr. Babe Ruth State Tourney, which ended after just 3 innings. Final Score: THE DUKES 20 HAVEN 00. With 17 hits and the 20 runs, this outcome was never in doubt. Brayden Higginbotham was on the mound for WELLINGTON and threw a 3 inning run-rule no hitter, gave up 2BB and struck out 1.
Congratulations to the WELLINGTON DUKES 18U Senior Babe Ruth Team (the guys on the top row in the pic!)...the 18U DUKES came out on top Friday evening in Game #1 vs Parsons at the STATE SR. BABE RUTH TOURNAMENT being held in Liberal this weekend. (8 team pool play format)
Good start Gentlemen!! Next action Saturday at 12:30pm vs Haven!
DUKES - 0 0 0 2 0 5 1 - 8 12 3
PARSONS - 0 0 0 0 4 2 0 - 6 11 3

"Coach Pitch" League got underway Tuesday evening at Worden Park, for both boys and girls. (We'll have pics of the girls later this week!) "Coach Pitch" League is for younger children, 6-8 and introduces them to the game - Coaches are actively involved with the team members in all aspects of the game, from dugout protocol to what's going on field-wise. I like it because EVERYONE has fun! Lots of smiles and lots of great young athletes beginning their treks upward and onward!
The WHS & WMS Girls Basketball Camps wrapped up on Friday after "4" days of basketball drills, scrimmaging and team bonding. Coach Eric Adams is impressed with a lot of the girls skill levels and their quickness - DEFENSE is going to be key this coming season and that quickness will definitely come in handy! Not a lot of height to go around, but some quick and talented ball players that will make up for some of that.

Wellington has "2" squads that rotated in and out, the RED team and the WHITE team - it's time to meet the athletes!
#55 - Andrew "Stretch" Clark
The 2017-2018 WMS Knight Wrestling Squad had their first HOME action Thursday evening in the main gym at WMS. Visiting Prairie Hills, Haysville and Winfield would complete the double-dual and Wellington would emerge in the end with a split, defeating Haysville 66-42 and falling to Prairie Hills 42-54.
(Prairie Hills defeated Winfield 48-48 <tie-breaker H / first points scored>, Winfield defeated Haysville 52-44)
So on the night, it was Prairie Hills 2-0, Wellington 1-1, Winfield 1-1, and Haysville 0-2
Aaron Schoemann put pen to paper Wednesday out at WHS signing to play football next season for the BRAVES at Ottawa University in Ottawa, KS! Congratulations Aaron - that's an awesome opportunity!
With Aaron at the signing were his parents Jason and Jennifer Schoemann and also past coaches, clear back to little league! Those present included Zane Aguilar, Jeff Frazee, Mitch McComb and Joe Buresh. Additional friends and family were present, including teammates and classmates.
Almost a SWEEP for the Wellington Lady Crusaders, but the Buhler JV Lady Crusaders squeaked out a 6 pt victory over our younger squad, the Varsity Lady Crusaders won with authority though - results, stats and scoring below:
The CRUSADERS hosted the Crusaders (Buhler) Tuesday afternoon and evening out at WHS. The northern Crusaders with quickness, hot shooting and precision passing, not to mention a Paul Bunyan sized center on their Varsity Squad, proved to be too much, the local red team dropped all "3" boys games to the visitors - here are the outcomes and individual scoring:
The WHS boys let the game get away from them after battling hard early on. Final score was Buhler C-Team Boys 51, WHS 32.
The WMS 8th grade Lady Knights Monday evening in the PIONEER LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP game vs El Dorado at Mulvane MS, dotted every "i", crossed every "t", and iced every "cake" - this, their 30th game as Lady Knights, would also be their 30th VICTORY - these young ladies NEVER LOST the past two seasons! AWESOME!
Congratulations to the Wellington Middle School 7th Grade Lady Knights Basketball Team!!! After winning the "regular season" PIONEER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP, with only 1 loss, they now have added the end of season PIONEER LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP to their repertoire! Way to go Coach Whaley and Lady Knights!
Wellington Middle School held a Pep Assembly Monday afternoon - to give their two Lady Knight basketball teams a big sendoff as both the 7th and 8th grade girls play for the PIONEER LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP later this afternoon and evening at Mulvane MS. Both have already secured the regular season PIONEER LEAGUE TITLE - it's time to complete the package!!
Both the WHS Varsity and Jr. Varsity wrestlers were in action on Saturday at 2 different venues. The former participated in the 20+ team invitational at Rose Hill HS, the latter at a JV Invitational held at Wichita South HS. "8" Crusaders overall (both venues combined) placed in the TOP 6 in their respective weight classes - congrats to them and all - here are overall results from both venues:
The WMS 7/8 Basketball Knights were up bright and early Saturday for quarterfinal action at this season's PIONEER LEAGUE TOURNAMENT being held in Clearwater. When the dust all settled on the day, the 7th graders advanced to the semi's with a 37-24 victory over host Clearwater, the 8th graders would call it a season, falling to Winfield 58-28.
Both the 7th grade and 8th grade Lady Knight basketball squads came one game closer to all the marbles Saturday in semi-final action at Mulvane vs Mulvane in the season concluding PIONEER LEAGUE TOURNAMENT which will culminate on Monday.
Congratulations to Coach Frazee and his 8th grade Lady Knights - their 37-17 victory Saturday improved their overall season record to 14-0 and now 11-0 in league! One more big game to go, Monday at Mulvane MS vs El Dorado MS at approx. 6:15pm.
Down 4 pts after 1 qtr of play, the Crusaders stepped it up a notch and by half lead by 3, 22-19. Wellington added to that lead in the 3rd qtr and would head down the stretch with the Wildcats with a mildly comfortable 6 point advantage, 35-29, and only 8 minutes to go.
Turned out not to be a "good 8 minutes" for the visiting Crusaders, El Dorado put the pedal to the medal, outscoring WHS 17-4 and secured the non-league victory for their home crowd, final 46-39.
Only close in the beginning, as any contest is, the WHS Varsity Lady Crusaders pulled away early from their host at El Dorado HS Friday evening, ending the night with a 4th qtr running clock, Wellington hustled their way to the 62-31 victory.
The #8 seed Lady Crusaders finished up the Wildcat Classic at Haven HS on Saturday. After a huge upset win on Thursday vs the host and #1 seed Lady Wildcats (49-46), the girls in red lost that "mo", falling to #5 seed Cheney on Friday (53-29) and then coming up short vs #3 seed Kingman on Saturday, (57-40). Still a 4th place finish in a field of 8 so nothing to hang your head about there. Cheney's full court press, (same press that gave the Lady Crusaders difficulties back on Dec. 7th at WHS), was again too much for the girls in red.
The WHS Varsity and JV Wrestlers headed west Thursday for dual action vs Pratt HS. In the end, the Crusaders won about as many matches but 2 open weights and most of their losses by pins, was the team score difference in the end. Big Varsity Invitational this weekend at WHS - that gets underway @ 9AM in the main gym!
106 - Open
113 - Open
120 - Colin Green (Lost by fall)
126 - Blake Bales (Won by fall)
The 2017-18 Basketball season for our girls and boys student-athletes at WHS, got underway Tuesday evening in Day 1 action of the Cheney Invitational. WHS switched their early season schedule this year after playing for "MANY" years in the 3 day Kingman Tournament @ KHS. The Cheney Invite is different in that each team plays 1 HOME game, 1 ROAD game and then the finale on Saturday at Cheney HS. It's a round robin format. WHS will host Cheney this Thursday and then go up against Chaparral @ Cheney on Saturday.
Winter sports are underway, well at least at the middle school! Both the girls and boys 7/8 A&B teams had their season openers last night (Thursday), the boys hosted HAYSVILLE WEST MS here at WMS in both gyms and the girls traveled to HAYSVILLE WEST for some road action.
Overall, a good night for the KNIGHTS and LADY KNIGHTS – the former SPLIT, winning 2 and losing 2 but the latter (the ladies!) swept Haysville West (on the road), coming home with 4 wins and no losses – great start to the season!
Here are the stats we have so far!
This Fall at WMS, something occurred that really doesn't occur very often so it is worthy of mention! It's a very notable year when anyone makes the All-Time Top 10 List at anything. Between early September and early October this Fall, three young Knights, (a 6th grader and "2" 7th graders), all made the WMS 7th Gr Boys Cross Country All-Time TOP 10 List..."3" boys in "ONE" season, on a list that has existed since 1991! That's pretty spectacular!
WHS's pioneering Girls Golf team headed to Hays on Monday for Regional 4A action. The weather wasn't very golf-like for sure, cloudy, winds gusting to 35mph and cool temps in the low 50's - not good golfing weather at all. Wellington Freshman Payton Ginter buckled down though and shot a 109, a score that would place her in 12th out of about 50 participants and would advance her on to the State 4A Girls Golf Tournament in Topeka coming up on Monday, Oct. 16th.
Coach Brian Aufdengarten's Regional perspective:
"Day 1 was very exciting qualifying 5 of our players and all guaranteed a state trip on the first day.
Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten received the #2 seed and won over Trinity and Andover Central putting them in the semifinals.
The FR/SO Football Team got their season underway Monday evening down at Sellers Park. After a big VARSITY WIN Friday at Clearwater (34-6), it was the younger Crusaders turn and they took care of business too, winning 22-8. The temps were in the mid 90's when the game got underway at 6pm...Wellington took the lead early on and held it throughout.

The season gets underway Saturday early at Winfield...look for some exciting Volleyball action Saturday and beyond! GO LADIES GO!!
The 2017 Crusader Football Camp got underway on Monday, under partly cloudy skies and unseasonably cool temps which are always welcome this time of year. Opening season kickoff at Clearwater is slated for September 1st, just over 60 days from now...let the season begin!

After a rain delay from Monday, the Crusader Baseball boys resumed action in the first of 2 semi-final games to be played Wednesday, before the championship game nightcap (so to speak). Up first Mulvane - a late rally by the Wildcats came up short - WHS 6 MHS 4:
WHS 0 1 0 0 3 2 0 -6 8 1
MHS 0 0 0 0 3 1 0 - 4 4 5
It was Regional 4A Softball time in Ark City Tuesday, mother nature cooperated more than she had the night before in Winfield for the Regional 4A Baseball Tournament, which was rained out after the first game, that will conclude today, beginning at NOON for the Crusader Baseball boys.
