SrA Derek Martin

MacDill Air Force Base
Tampa, Florida

Hello - I graduated in 2005 from Wellington High School.  I am on my third deployment, the first was to Camp Bucca Iraq (7 months) "Operation Iraqi Freedom", my second to Kandahar Afghanistan (7 months) "Operation Enduring Freedom" and I am currently on my third to Baghdad Iraq (15 months) "Operation Iraqi Freedom.  My rank is SrA (Martin) United states Air Force and my current mission in Iraq is training the Iraqi Police their job so that they can take over Iraq and will not need us Americans there anymore.  I am stationed at Camp Stryker in Baghdad but spend little time inside the wire  (on base). I spend a huge majority of my time on the streets of Baghdad with the Iraqi Police and showing them how to do convoys.. I am the M249 Machine Gunner out of my Fire Team.   In late October of 2010 I get 15 days of free leave that the government will give me a plane ticket anywhere in the world.. I am going to Sydney Austraila.  Before this deployment I was stationed at Macdill Air Force Base in Tampa FL for 3 years, but when I get back to the states in Jan of 2011 I got my base of Preference.. which I chose MCconnell Air Force Base in Wichita and will be reporting there sometime in March of 2011... I chose this base to be closer to my Girlfriend and son.

I am currently stationed in Washington, D.C. at the Office of Naval Intelligence. Being in D.C. has finally given me some semblance of just what the teachers and staff at WHS have always said, "There is more to this world than just being a student in Wellington". Being around a overly abundant amount of cultures and influences, I have finally come to see that.
