Wellington wrapped up their 2011 tennis season on some good notes and sad ones also. Going into the tournament Wellington realized that they probably wouldn't place high in state teamwise because of losing half their team at the regional tournament.
Senior Erianne Adams opened things off with Van Rankin from Smoky Valley and lost a heartbreaker in the 1st round. Adams was leading 5-3 in the first set and Van Ranken took advantage of Adams emotions a little and came from behind to win 7-5. Adams settled down in the 2nd set and won 6-0, then came the 3rd set super-tiebreaker. Adams jumped out to a 3-0 lead, then in the end it was tied 9-9. On the next point Van Rankin hit the net cord and it dropped over the net for a point. Adams then lost the next point to end the match. Adams played Ramos from Chanute in her final high school match and won 9-0. Erianne did so much for our program, she helped us win a state championship, she was the first 4 time state qualifier, so has won numerous league and regional medals, and she reached her 100th career win this year. She will be missed so much.
The doubles team of Anderson/Jenkins started things off well on Friday beating Baldwin 6-0,6-0 and then Abilene 6-1,6-1. The pair lost thier quarterfinal match to LeMaster/Johnson from Collegiate 6-3,6-4. After the loss the pair could place anywhere from 5th thru 12th on Saturday. On Saturday the pair made the most of their opportunities and opened play with a familiar opponent in Buhler meeting for the 5th time this year. Wellington won the match 9-5. This pitted them against Hesston who finished above Wellington at regionals and Wellington won 9-4. In the 5th/6th place match the pair played Parsons, and Parsons jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Wellington tried coming back but eventually lost the match 9-4 to finish 6th. This was the second year in a row Anderson/Jenkins finished 6th, but we were in a lot tougher field this year, so I'm really proud of them. Jenkins will return next season being a junior, but the team will lose Anderson and Adams. These are always the toughest things when you are so close to the girls and those girls have done so much for your teams success. We will miss these two greatly. Anderson also moved above 100 career wins this year and was a 3 time state qualifier. Also lost to graduation this year will be Alex Kimball and Bailey Cornejo.

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
@ REGIONAL 4A TOURNEY (HESSTON)
FRIDAY-SATURDAY*, OCT. 07-08, 2011
*RAIN DELAY ON SATURDAY FORCED MONDAY PLAY
TO COMPLETE TOURNAMENT
COACH BRIAN AUFDENGARTEN FILED THE
FOLLOWING REPORT 10.10.11
We finally finished today after starting at 2:00. Tough, tough regional, never been
in this tough of one out of 24 regionals that I've been at. #1,#2,#4,#5,and #6
ranked teams there. We qualified 2 entries, 3 girls for the state tournament at Pratt
this Friday and Saturday. We would have liked to get a 3rd entry in but we will
take what we could here.
Freshman - Bailey Jacobs was eliminated on Friday. She had to
play a feeder match into the tournament and beat Wolfe from Haven 9-0. In her next match
she lost to #6 seeded Schuler from Maize South 6-3,6-1. Bailey played well her back started
bothering her something that bothered her earlier in the week at league. If we are in any other
regional she is probably in, she had a heck of a freshman season ending it at 23-8.
Doubles team of
Peyton Adams and Kelsey Whaley received the #5 seed and beat Dieckhoff/Radley from
Wichita Trinity 6-1,6-0. They then lost to #4 seed Funke/Dunn 6-2,6-1. This allowed them to
play on Saturday in a match to qualify for state against Good/Shrock from Hesston who
the Wellington pair beat about a week ago. In a close match, the Wellington pair had trouble
holding serve and got beat 6-4,6-3, which ended their season. Adams finished her freshman
year 23-8. Whaley finished her sophomore campaign 26-6. Not too bad having three young girls
with those types of records.
Erianne Adams a three time state qualifier had a tough road.
Erianne could only get the #8 seed in the tournament which only qualifies 6 entries in singles
and doubles. Erianne beat Cartwright from Circle the #9 seed, 6-0,6-2. She then lost to the #1 seed
from Collegiate Withrow 6-0,6-0. This gave Adams a chance to play on Saturday also trying
to qualify for state. Before the weather hit on Saturday she had to play #5 seeded Frentz from
Maize South. Adams lost the first set 6-0, then Adams calmed her nerves and won the next set 7-5.
Then the storms hit and haulted play for the day. Adams had to sit all weekend and wonder about one
more set. They opened play today playing only one set a race to 6 games. Adams took the lead 3-0,
then Frentz came back to 3-2. Then Adams pulled ahead again 5-2 and had match point and
didn't get it. It was tied 5-5, then Adams took a 6-5 lead, then Frentz sent it to a tiebreaker.
In the tiebreaker Adams previaled 7-4. Man I was so nervous for her, I didn't get too much
sleep this weekend, I don't know how she did. Adams is now the first female in Wellington High School
history to qualify all 4 years. Another milestone is that Adams got her 100 career win by beating Frentz.
In her final match she lost to Cho from Collegiate 6-4,6-0.
The only team that knew their destiny on
Friday was Dani Anderson and Kailey Jenkins. The pair ended up as the #1 seed and beat Haven 6-1,6-1
to open up. Then they beat Good/Schrock from Hesston 6-2,6-0. Then came day 2 and the pair
only got 3 games in against Dunn/Funke from Collegiate before the rain hit. On continued play today
Wellington won the first set 6-3 over Collegiate and was leading 4-3 in the 2nd set before a huge rally
from the Collegiate pair left Wellington looking at a third set after they won 6-4. In the final set Collegiate
played very well and won 6-2. In the third place match Wellington played a familiar pair in Wiens/Dukart
from Buhler meeting for the fourth time. Wellington didn't play extremely well after a long day but prevailed
winning 6-4,6-4 good for 3rd place. I'm proud of these two girls, it would have been nice getting
the previous match, but even qualifying out of this regional really says something. The pair move to
24-10 on the season.

"B" Team is 4-1 on the season
Both B and A teams battled hard against a fundamentally good team. A few crucial errors
were the turning point in set one in second game of the A team and also 3rd set
of B game. "I felt our spiking was some what more consistant and also the A girls got
some really good front line blocks and joust plays at the net." We have 2 games left and
the goal is to have more consistent and aggressive hitting out of our girls.

The girls had a good showing, we wanted to play Buhler head to head again since they
are the top team in 4A right now. Earlier in the season we split with them, then
they got us at Circle early in September, and now we split again. Our #2 doubles had a
great day only giving up 1 game all day in the finals to a solid Buhler pair. Erianne was striking
the ball very well early, and got a blister on her index finger in the first game of her last match
which was bothering her. Dani and Kailey beat the Buhler team for the second time this year
which was huge going into league and regionals. Alex played very well and had an extremly
tough match in the finals and lost 7-2.

Wellington had some bright spots on the day. There were 32 singles players and 32
doubles teams in the tournament. Both of Wellington's singles players won their
opening round. Then both lost in their 2nd round. Erianne Adams and Baylee Jacobs both
finished in the top 16. The two finished tied at 15th/16th place. The last match they were
both paired up and it wasn't necessary to play that last match, both had a very long day
and we were getting the same amount of points. Wellington did have a doubles team medal
at 10th with a good performance on the day. Kailey Jenkins and Dani Anderson won
their first match, then lost to Conway Springs who made the finals and took 2nd. We
haven't played against them well this year, last year we beat them but right now we've lost
twice to the Conway team. This is when Jenkins/Anderson turned up their game and beat
LeMaster/Johnson of Collegiate in a tiebreaker. That match was great because of how good
that team is, they are 2 time state champions in doubles and LeMaster is a 3 time state
champion. Next they faced Hesston who finished 3rd at state and won 8-6. In their final match
the pair lost to Wichita Independent. Overall these two did some really good things, but we
know we can be better. Wellington's other doubles was Kelsey Whaley and Peyton Adams who
had a very good tournament. They played a top team in the state in 5A in their opening round and
almost pulled off the upset, but lost 8-5. That lost was kind of a good loss if there is one because
of how good we performed. Wellington almost let up against Ellinwood in their next match but found a
way to win, then was a match up with Hesston's other state qualifiers and Whaley/Adams won 8-5. That
was an awesome win, this team is a very good team. Up next was Smoky Valley and Wellington won 8-2.
In their final match the pair wore out and lost to Bishop Carroll. They had a great tournament and finished
3-2 on the day. Wellington finished 1 point behind Independence and beat all the other 4A teams.

by their serves. "A" team played a great game. Winfield sent first hit over net majority of time.
Our girls, played our game and used a 3 conversion bump, set, spike throughout the
whole game. Their passing was excellent last night. It is fun to watch the girls pull out effort saves
which we had
3 scrappy saves to ignite the team's energy. Very proud of their performance last night
