The WHS Track Squad was represented well this weekend at the State 4A Track Meet at Wichita State University.
(All Classes 1A-6A compete at this meet) WHS Junior Megan Campbell shined, finishing 4th in both the 100M
Dash and 200M Dash. Only .10 secs separated Megan's 4th place finish in the 100M and the winner from
KC-Piper. Similarily in the 200M, just .33 secs separated 4th from 1st. Here is the breakdown on
Preliminary and Finals action at WSU on both Friday and Saturday.

STATE 4A GOLF 2012 - MONDAY 05.21.12 @ KANSAS CITY - RESULTS
WHS Jr. Logan Woodbridge finished 28th (83) out of a field of 106 participants at the Dub Dread Golf Club in Kansas City on Monday. Colby Yates of Tonganoxie shot a 69 and is the 2012 Kansas Class 4A State Individual Champion. Parker Miller of KC Piper placed 2nd @ 73. Congratulations Logan on a fine season and a fine showing at STATE 4A! We are proud of you! |

STATE 4A BOYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT - WHS TENNIS FINAL UPDATE!
SATURDAY - MAY 12, 2012 @ TOPEKA
Evan Keller's and Brian Peck's run at the State 4A Doubles Tennis Championship at
Topeka this weekend came up short
in the Championship Finals Match vs Independence Saturday afternoon. The Crusader Duo won the first set 7-5 but fell in sets 2 and 3 (3-6, 1-6) to lay claim to the State 4A Runner-Up hardware - very respectable but short of both player's goals. A very fine season nonetheless for both Keller and Peck who brought home the first place trophy from last weekend's Regional 4A Tournament @ Collegiate. Today's action concludes a long and successful WMS and WHS Tennis career for Keller who graduates with his Class of 2012 classmates Sunday at WHS. Jr. Brian Peck will return next school year for his final run as a Crusader netter!

The Wellington Middle School 6th grade boys tennis team participated in their first meet of the season at Collegiate.
Winning yesterday for the Knights were:
Cade Phelps, Jaden Adams, Trenton Hodson, Braiden Buresh, Jared Oathout and Aaron Schoemann in singles.
Doubles winners were: Hodson/Buresh and Oathout/Schoemann.

Wellington won its 5th varsity meet of the year out of 7 meets at the Circle Invitational with 8 teams competing in the meet.
#1 Singles player Evan Keller won his fourth meet of the year. He won his first two matches 8-1 then beat Payton Hays from Parsons 8-3 in the finals. It was kind of a bittersweet match because Hays had beat Keller last year in this tournament in an ending that ended in an argument about a call. Evan played very good and is playing good overall tennis he definitely got off to a better start this year against Hays, last year he got down 7-1 before coming back.
#1 Doubles Levi Gurley & Brian Peck put together another good performance and won the title over Circle 8-2. In their first match they beat Labette County 8-0, then Collegiate 8-5. We did some things a little better especially our movement at the net.
#2 Doubles Derek Pettegrew & Connor Vaughn went 3-0 also with little trouble on the day. They opened things up against El Dorado winning 8-0, then beat Independence 8-1. In their final match they beat Parsons 8-3. These two have had two good tournaments together and are 5-1 in the two meets.
#2 Singles player Dutch Brownlee was seeded 7th and almost upset the #2 seed from Circle in the first round losing 6-8. Brownlee then bounced back and won his next two matches to finish 5th overall and outdo his seed. Dutch has picked up some much needed wins at singles that we've needed for team points in the past two tournaments.

There were 32 Singles Players / 32 Doubles Teams on hand at Goddard on Saturday
for the John Markham Classic – our Wellington participants finished the day as follows:
EVAN KELLER: finished 7th overall. Won over Gradert –Goddard Eisenhower 8-2, Won over
Lopez - Goddard 8-1, Lost to #1 seeded Hickman –Hutchinson HS 0-8, lost to #5 Craig-Lawrence
Free State 6-8, beat #6 seed from Blue Valley West 8-0.
BRIAN PECK & LEVI GURLEY: finished 4th overall. Beat Independence 8-6, Beat #5 seeded
Blue Valley West 8-6, beat #4 seeded Salina Central 8-5, lost to Hutchinson 8-6, lost to Goddard 8-6.
The CRUSADERS finished 10th place overall as a team out of 16 teams present, many of
which were 5A and 6A Schools – great job Crusaders!

TUESDAY, APR. 3, 2012
The Varsity Tennis Team played at Chaparral on Tuesday and had some good results on the
day. The team mixed their lineup up a bit and sat their normal #1 doubles and #1 singles.
Derek Pettegrew finished 1st overall going 3-0 on the day playing in the #1 singles position.
"Derek played good his closest match was 8-3 over a state qualifier from Meade." Playing #2 singles
was Weston Driskell who went 2-1 on the day good for 3rd place. "Weston has played in 2
varsity matches now and medaled in both." Filling in at #1 doubles was Connor Vaughn and
Dutch Brownlee, who also went 2-1 on the day good for 3rd place. They lost one match to
Meade in a tiebreaker. Playing #2 doubles was Chaz Crittenden and Jon Ryberg. Their pair went
3-0 and took first place just as they did this past weekend in the JV meet at Chaparral. "They are
playing pretty decent together and work well together, they like playing in Chaparral they are
now 8-0 there this season." Wellington just edged Meade in the team standings and brought
home the championship team plaque.

because of other committments. Playing doubles and taking 1st place were
Austin Samona and Avery Chaney at #2 doubles. Nathan Hunt went 1-2 on the day at
#1 singles for 3rd place.

as Crusaders! As a team they finished 11th but shot a lot of good golf as well Coach Smith
