ERNIE BARRETT NIGHT Wellington High School February 12, 2010 In 1947, the WHS Basketball Team won the State Basketball Championship. Team member
Ernie Barrett helped lead the squad to a 21-4 season and the only State Basketball Championship
in the history of the school. Ernie went on to play at Kansas State where he received All American
Honors and lead the 'Cats to the 1951 NCAA Championship Game. Following that, Ernie participated
in the East vs West All Star game at Madison Square Garden and was named MVP. In the first round
of the NBA draft to follow, the Boston Celtics drafted Ernie where he played under Red Auerbach
for two years in the early 50's. Ernie, his WHS teammate Jerry Wilson of Wellington were honored
at WHS this night - a historical night for fans of Crusader Basketball, K-State & the Celtics!
Local entrepreneur Kelly Edgar, a good friend of Ernie's, was very instrumental in the night's
activities, including the reception held for Ernie and his wife Bonnie @ Edgar Oil Company in
downtown Wellington. Thanks Kelly!
The photos below are a mix, some taken at the reception where Ernie signed copies of his
recent book - "Weekend at Ernie's". Also present were Mayor Roger Stallbaumer and State
Representative Vince Wetta, both who present Ernie with commemorative plaques.
