When the (3-2) Altamont-Labette County Grizzlies jumped out to an early 12-0 lead over the (4-1) Wellington Crusaders Friday evening at Sellers Park, what seemed like impending doom for the home faithful, turned into a 27-20 lead at halftime by the Irondukes, and a display of tenacity and ultimatae DESIRE to win. Despite unfortunate and nearly game outcome-changing unsportsmanlike and other penalties, Wellington football, it's coaches and it's players, were at their best. As the seconds ticked off the 4th qtr, the Crusaders moved to 5-1 on the season, final score Labette 26 Wellington 33.

Labette County's QB, Easton Dean, a 6' 7", 230 lb Senior, also a D1 prospect with a "hard commit" to Iowa State next season, is an excellent QB. The local boys in RED did intercept him twice and sacked and/or tackled him numerous times, but he still managed to complete 17 of 32 passes for 315 yds. Probably the biggest component of the game missing for the visiting grizzlies, they had no place-kicker. The game wasn't decided with certainty until less than a minute remained. The Crusaders stopped the grizzlies on 4 downs, left them with zero time outs and little opportunity to make the 2 1/2 hr bus ride home an enjoyable one. Coach Aguilar praised his team for their desire to win, their no-quit attitude and enters week 7 of the 2018 season with a 5-1 record, a record not held by the IRONDUKES after 6 weeks of play since 2005!

Results from Friday's action haven't been added yet by all of the schools, but this following link, once they are added, will show you where Wellington and the other 4A schools (East & West Groups) stand (after 6 weeks of play) "seeding-wise" for Home Field advantage week #9. (Use drop-down box to indicate 4A)

Next up for the CRUSADERS, a familiar opponent, at least coaching-wise. Wellington heads east to Viking Land this coming Friday to take on Linn Hibbs' Winfield squad. Going into last night's action, the Vikings were 2-3. There 28-12 victory over El Dorado moves them to 3-3 on the season.
