A message from UD 353 School Superintendent Adam Hatfield (07.23.20)

Dear USD 353 and Wellington Community,

There have been many changes over the last few days regarding the reopening of schools. I know this has prompted many questions. As most of you are aware, Governor Kelly signed two Executive Orders, 20-58 and 20-59. Executive Order 20-58 mandated that school openings be delayed until after Labor Day. Executive Order 20-59 mandated that all students and staff wear masks, sanitize/wash hands hourly, and have temperature checks daily before entering the school. The detailed Executive Orders can be found here The State Board of Education had to approve Executive Order 20-58. They voted on Wednesday and it was a 5-5 vote. This means the Executive Order was not affirmed.

The decision is now in the hands of local school officials on when to start schools. Here are the next steps for USD 353: ● Reopening Plan: The district’s planning teams will continue to work on its reopening plan with this new information, as well as with survey data we are collecting from parents and employees. (The survey is available until Friday, July 24th on the USD 353 website) A summary of the plan will be presented to the BOE at their Special Meeting on July 27th for discussion. ● School Start Date and Health Guidelines:

We have been meeting with officials at the Sumner County Health Department to determine an appropriate start date for our schools as well as guidelines we will need to follow when schools reopen. There will be a discussion regarding the school start date at the BOE Special Meeting on July 27th. The health guidelines for our school will be outlined in our reopening plan.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their patience, support and flexibility during these ever changing times.

Sincerely, Adam Hatfield Superintendent, USD 353
