WHS VARSITY BOYS TENNIS
@ Collegiate
Monday, April 10, 2017

"Except for a couple of matches that should have gone our way,we could have had a 3rd place finish and possibly 2nd at a pretty tough tournament... but instead finished one point behind Maize in 4th place. With Easton Ewy/Collegiate and Andrew Klimiuk/Kapaun MC in the Singles draw, Brock Edwards finished about as well as he could in 3rd place with a 8-5 win against Sanders from Maize. Will Long had a hard fought 1st round battle against Foss, a very good player from Kapaun and prevailed 8-4. Physically, that match took its toll in the final where Will ran out of gas and fell to a good young player from Hesston 8-5. Will continues to play very well and gets many accolades from the other coaches for his tenacity and "never give up" mentality. In Doubles, we continue to struggle. I played Jaden Adams/Reece Langford #1 for the first time this season without much success. They finished 6th but could have easily finished 3rd or 4th... and would have if not for so many unforced errors, fundamental mistakes and just giving up too many easy points. I played Carson LeGrand/Jared Oathout at #2 for the first time and they played remarkably well after a few games to adjust to one another. They did a great job getting their serves in, getting to the net and controlling play. They lost a close 2nd match or they would have been playing for 1st and 2nd. As it turned out, they were only able to secure a fourth place finish which pretty good for their first outing."

7/8 WMS BASKETBALL UPDATE (Mon Games)
vs HAYSVILLE (Girls THERE / Boys HERE)
Thursday,Feb. 3, 2017

The WMS Wrestlers were on the road again Thursday at Augustafor double-dual action with host Augusta and visiting Circle. The Knights with 4 open weights and Augusta with only 1, put the red team down 18 before the matches got underway. The Knights battled hard but couldn’t quite close the gap by dual end, final tally Augusta 42-54. Our young boys did rally in their second dual of the evening vs Circle, winning that one 57-33, bringing their season dual record to 3-1 and just as a reminder the Knights brought home “9” medals last weekend from the Valley Center Invitational.

This is the Knights first DUAL LOSS in 2 seasons, if you add last year’s record to this year’s thus far, the Knights are 15-1 in their last 16 duals – that is quite an achievement. Coaches Jeff DeJarnett and Joey Haydon work hard with the Knights and bring ‘em to the mat every event ready for action. Tough loss vs Augusta but with 4 open weights (net 3), awesome effort and awesome comeback over Circle!!

The Knights have a week or so to prepare for some HOME MAT ACTION next Thursday, Feb. 9th.when they host Haysville, Prairie Hills and Winfield, starting at 4:30PM in the main gym at WMS. It will be Wellington vs Haysville at 4:30PM, Prairie Hills vs Winfield and then to follow at around 5:30PM, Wellington vs Winfield and Haysville vs Prairie Hills.
Good Luck Gentlemen!

WHS VARSITY FOOTBALL @ Mulvane
Week #2 - District Play
Friday, Oct. 21, 2016

It was WEEK 2 of district play - (0-1) Wellington after a loss at home vs Winfield (20-21 OT) in WEEK 1, was on the road Friday to (1-0) Mulvane who had downed Ulysses last Friday 28-14. Ulysses was at Winfield for WEEK 2 and would make their 4 hr ride back home more bearable with a 33-3 win over the now (1-1) Vikings. Ulysses enters WEEK 3 at 1-1 as well.

In the Wellington vs Mulvane game, a nice opening drive by the Crusaders was unfortunately halted on downs before paydirt could be reached. The drive would be one of just a few highlights on the evening for Wellington who's roster was down an additional 7 players from last week because of injuries. Mulvane behind their star QB Price and RB Shoemaker would dominate the scoreboard through the first 3 qtrs, leading 34-00 at halftime and 48-0 midway through the 3rd qtr. A running clock resulted - Wellington did get on the scoreboard late in the game on a 74 yd. run and subsequent PAT (by Glover). Final score Mulvane 48 Wellington 7. The Wildcats move to 2-0 in district play with Ulysses in the driver's seat for the #2 spot. (0-2) Wellington travels to (1-1) Ulysses this coming week for the final regular season game of the year. (2-0) Mulvane will take on (1-1) Winfield.

Wellington generated 283 total yds of offense, 149 rushing, 134 passing. Colton Glover was the lead rusher, carrying the ball 15 times for 121 yds and a TD. Deyton Araujo had 6 carries for 20 yds, Cade Phelps 2 for 5 yds, Joe Ybarra 1 for 3 yds and DeAndre Washington 1 for 0. Cade Phelps passed for 134 yds, (9 of 23), Caleb Reichenberger snagged two of those for 55 yds, Joe Ybarra had 3 receptions for 51 yds, Silas Popplewell 2 receptions for 16 yds and DeAndre Washington 2 receptions for 12 yds. Mulvane's QB alone (#7 Price) generated 248 yds of total offense, running the ball 121 yds (on 7 carries) and passing for 127 yds. Wildcat running back Shoemaker (#30) rushed for 194 yds on 16 carries - altogether Mulvane had 442 yds total offense. (315 - Rushing 127 - Passing)

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
@ STATE 4A Tournament (Winfield)
Fri-Sat, October 14-15, 2016

After superb play in Pratt last weekend at the 4A Regional Girls Tennis Tournament, all "6" Wellington girls, having qualified for bigger and better things, set their sights on State 4A action in Winfield this weekend with mixed results.

The weather cooperated for the most part during the two days of action, but Friday's moderate temps and light winds gave way on Saturday to higher temps and gustier winds as GIRLS TENNIS TEAMS from across the State of Kansas converged on the TH Vaughn Tennis Center in Winfield (a very nice facility) for the sole purpose of determining eventual State Champions in both Doubles and Singles play.

In Singles competition on Friday, Abby Lowe lost to Nihart of Winfield 5-7, (2-7) 6-2, 7-10 in a match that lasted more than 2 hours. After receiving a BYE, Abby was eliminated by Haxton of Smokey Valley 0-9.

Also in Singles competition Friday, Lexi Saffell lost to Hammer of Winfield 0-6, 1-6 and then lost to Beswick of Abilene 6-9. Both Abby and Lexi are Juniors and will return next season so we all look forward to that!

In Doubles action Friday, Avery Rusk and Lauryn Snipes fell short 3-6, 4-6 vs Loy/Davis of Chapman. In a later match vs Fowles/Vallin of Clay Center, Lauryn and Avery would suffer their second and final loss 6-9. Avery a junior will return for more court action next season...her and Senior Snipes are about to embark on another big year in basketball.

Also in Doubles play Friday, Junior Mekenna Adams and Freshman Kylie Aufdengarten would secure the only "FRIDAY" win for the Lady Crusaders, downing Beswick/Olberding of Abilene 6-0, 6-1 after receiving a BYE for their Regional Runner-Up status the weekend prior in Pratt. In a later match on Friday, Adams and Aufdengarten were defeated by Bellah/Roets of Smokey Valley 3-6, 3-6. The 1-1 record was enough to advance the duo to Saturday action though.

In their first match on Saturday, Adams and Aufdengarten were victorious over Bruce/Myers of McPherson by the final score of 9-2. And they weren't through yet folks!!

In the subsequent match vs Parsons, after starting off 0-4, rallied and defeated Parsons 9-5. The Wellington duo would now play for 5th/6th place vs Collegiate. This final match of the day went to a tie-breaker......the Wellington ladies pulled it out, 9-8 (7-5) nailing down 5th place and the accompanying hardware!!!

Congratulations to both Mekenna and Kylie...when Regional 4A action began last weekend across the State, there were 80 doubles teams in competition. Today, in Winfield, Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten bettered 75 of those teams by State 4A Tourneys' end. Congratulations ladies and congrats to Mekenna - a junior, Mekenna has qualified for State all "3" years of high school and has medaled all "3" years as well. Congratulations ladies - you and Kylie will both be back next year - as will most of this year's State Tournament team - it's only going to get better!! GO BIG RED!!

COACH AUFTY REFLECTS ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

Season came to an end this weekend which had Wellington take all 6 players to state for the first time since 2010.

After finishing 12th last season as a team, we wanted to get in the top 10 this year, and we finished 9th.

Singles player Lexi Saffell started out the day playing Sarah Hammer from Winfield who finished 12th at state last year, and lost 6-0,6-1. Then Saffell played Kaylin Beswick from Abilene. The match was close throughout with Saffell being down one game throughout the match. Saffell was down 6-7, and had about two or three add points to tie the match up but Beswick held on from that point to win the match 9-6. Lexi played well, it was a goal of hers to make the varsity team and make it to state, she accomplished both, and was close to winning a match at state. Saffell finishes the year with an overall record of 19-12.

Singles player Abby Lowe also started out the day with a Winfield player in Megan Nihart. The match was a long match with it going back and forth, but Lowe came up a little short losing 6-7(2-7),6-2,7-10. Then Lowe actually got a second round bye because regional winner Sayka Smith didn't show up to the state meet. This put Lowe in a match to qualify for day 2 and to medal against Haxton from Smoky Valley. Haxton proved that she was a two time state qualifier though winning the match 9-0. Abby has improved a bunch since last year and played one singles all year. Last year she ended the season 15-15, and this year she finished 24-10.

Doubles team of Lauryn Snipes and Avery Rusk opened their daywith Loy/Davis from Chapman. The Wellington pair could never get any momentum and made errors they haven't made lately keeping the ball in play. Chapman won the match 6-3,6-4. In their next match they faced a regional winner Fowles/Vallin from Clay Center. The Wellington pair came out much better and led the match 6-5, but then gave up 4 straight games, losing 9-6. These two had a heck of a year, didn't end the way we thought, but so proud of them. One of their highlights came at league last week winning the league title.

Doubles team of Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten had a nice run in the state tournament this weekend. The pair had a first round bye and in their first match faced Beswick/Olberding of Abilene. Wellington disposed of the team quickly winning 6-0,6-1, in front of a huge Wellington crowd. Wow there was so many Wellington fans during that match, you knew every time our girls hit a winner because of the amount of people there. This put Adams and Aufdengarten in the quarterfinals against Bellah/Roets from Smoky Valley. The match started and the Smoky Valley team made up of two seniors dominated the net and was very aggressive. Wellington would battle but came up short in both sets 6-3,6-3. Day 2 started with Wellington paired against Bruce/Myers from McPherson whom Wellington beat earlier in the season. Wellington jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back winning the match 9-3. This then paired Wellington up with Beardmore/Rogers from Parsons. Parsons looked really good on day 1, and Parsons came out well against Wellington jumping up 4-1. Adams and Aufdengarten then relaxed and started taking care of a few adjustments and took a 5-4 lead. The Wellington pair then had confidence and momentum, and won 9-5. This pitted them in the 5th/6th place match against Cody/Geoffroy from Collegiate who beat the Wellington girls 6-2,6-0 the week before. Wellington fell behind again 4-1, then caught up and tied it at 4-4. Collegiate then jumped up 7-4, then 8-5. We talked at the changeover to just compete don't give in and pretty soon the girls won the next 3 games to send the match to a tiebreak. Collegiate jumped up 2-0, then Wellington won 3, to make it 3-2. Wellington had a 5-3 lead and then gave up 2 points to tie it at 5-5. Adams then ripped a shot down the line on a poaching Collegiate player to tie at 6-6, then Wellington won the next two points winning the match. Oh wow that was exciting, the crowd was so loud on our winning shots we had a lot of people watching the match and rooting for us.

Adams has now been a three time state medalist, and she was the only freshman to medal in Wellington history. She hasn't had the luxury of playing with the same partner every year either, but finally will next year.
Freshman year -9th
Sophomore year -7th
Junior year - 5th

Adams and Aufdengarten end the season at 27-11.

Very happy and emotional weekend for us and very proud of our team this season, a great group of girls. Excited about next season already.

HERE vs Winfield (District Play Game #1)

WINFIELD 21 WELLINGTON 20 (OT)

Game one of district play was decided by one point. Winfield snatched a pivotal overtime win at Wellington on October 14. It was historical night that was destined to go down in Crusader lore no matter the outcome. Former Wellington coaches Linn Hibbs and T.D. Buck are in their first season coaching for Winfield. The 2001 Hibbs-lead Crusader state championship football team was on hand celebrating their 15th anniversary, and was recognized at halftime. Wellington's first year Head Coach, Zane Aguilar was a member of that '01 squad. The two head coaches shared a moment with the rest of the championship team at the tailgate party about an hour and a half prior to kickoff. On top of all that, it was senior night. The stage was set and the two WHS' didn't disappoint.

Wellington's opening drive began on their own 25-yard line. The first play was a fumbled snap, recovered by QB Cade Phelps for a one yard loss, but the play didn't stifle the possession. The Iron Dukes proceeded to march the ball to the Winfield three-yard line, thanks to a nice pass-and-catch from Phelps to Joe Yabarra, a big run by Chris Kop, and a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty on the Vikings. The Crusader offense couldn't crack the goal line though, and turned it over on downs.

Winfield couldn’t get out of the shadow of their own goalpost, the Iron Duke “D” forced a three-and-out and the next Wellington drive began from the Winfield 38. It began slowly, but after one first down, Colton Glover popped off a big run that would eventually set up him up for a goal line TD run, his first of three on the evening, with 3:34 to go in the first. The extra point was no good, Wellington lead 6-0.

Later in the second quarter, the Vikings put together a long drive of their own that landed them inside the Wellington five. The Iron Duke defense would have none of it as they held Winfield out of the end zone on a forth and two play with 8:13 to go before half.

Now it was Wellington's turn to try to get out of that ol' goalposts' shadow. They could not. Winfield had a good return on the punt, which would lead to a well-timed screen pass with the Viking QB, Traiton Suttles rolling out to his right and throwing back to the left for a first down. That play helped set up the go-ahead, two-yard touchdown run by Jack Mull. Winfield 7, Wellington 6 with 2:36 left in the second; that would end up being the halftime score.

Winfield had something going to start the second half but Chris Kop put a stop to that with a sack near mid-field. Suttles was sacked again on the next play by several red jerseys and the Vikings were forced to punt.

On the ensuing Crusader possession Phelps connected with Ybarra, who had gotten behind the Winfield secondary, for a big 32 yard pass play. This was followed by a 20 + yard run by Kop that would have set Wellington up inside the Winfield five, but a holding call took it off the board. A few plays later on third and one from the Winfield 24, Glover broke for a 21-yard run to set up his second touchdown of the night, this one from the two-yard line. Going for two, Phelps thew it to De'Andre Washington for a successful try. With 2:39 left in the third, the boys in red lead 14-7.

No so fast, said Winfield! On the first play of the following the kickoff after the TD, Jayden Tate made a house call from 60 yards out, racing down the east sideline. It was all tied up at 14 with 2:21 to go in the third.

From that point on, the two 0-6 teams traded punts but they weren't without their drama. First Wellington's Trayson Probst handled a low snap that he was somehow able to get off, surrounded by white jerseys, for a 26-yard boot. Winfield was forced to punt on the next possession, the Crusaders muffed it and the ball was recovered by the Vikings at their own 47 with around nine minutes left in the contest.

Wellington's Caleb Reichenberger looked to have a strip sack of Suttles, but the refs said the QB was down, however it did set up a third down and 23. Failing to make a first down, Winfield punted it away. Then Wellington punted it away and the Vikings muffed it but they were able to recover it.

Winfield was able to move the ball to the Crusader 35, overtime eventually came, but it's worth noting that the Vikings' kicker, Rigan Stoll was taking practice kicks from the 30 at halftime with plenty of leg. It would come down to said leg, albeit from a much shorter distance, but first...

Overtime. Of course...how could this game go any other way? Each team would get at least one possession starting at the opponent's 10-yard line. The possessions would continue until a winner was decided.

Wellington's OT game plan? His name was Colton Glover. He carried it three times, scoring on the last one. With one extra point missed after the first touchdown of the night, Aguilar decided to go for two. Phelps faked hand-offs to two running backs before rolling out to his right only to be met by the Vikings' Adam Rush for a sack. After one possession it was Wellington 20, the other WHS 14.

Winfield's turn. They ran the ball three times, moving the ball to the Crusader one. Fourth down. Suttles snapped the ball and plunged forward. He was swallowed up in what could only be compared to a rugby scrum. It was white jerseys pushing red jerseys and vice versa for approximately seven seconds. The refs pealed players away after the whistle to find Suttles across the goal line. The TD tied it at 20.

Remember Winfield's kicker that was blasting kicks from 40-yards out at halftime? Now all he had to do was kick it in from 12 yards for the extra point. After an attempt to freeze him with a timeout, Stoll broke Crusader hearts everywhere with a swift swing of his leg. Wellington falls to 0-7 with two road games left to round out the regular season, next week at Mulvane (October 21) then at Ulysses (October 28).

In the other 4A Divison One, District 5 game, Mulvane defeated Ulysses 28-14. That puts the district standings like this:

1. Mulvane (+14 points)
2. Winfield (+1)
3. Wellington (-1)
4. Ulysses (-14)

Glover had a big night for Wellington with 28 carries, 149 yards and the three touchdowns. It was the first time this season the Crusaders had an individual player rush for 100 yards. Phelps went 7/17, passing for 90 yards and completing the one two-point play to Washington. Ybarra caught five passes for 70 yards. As a team Wellington rushed for 255 yards and had 345 yards of total offense.

Highlights from Coach Aufdengarten - Finished 4th, one point out of third. We finished 6th last season.

#2 doubles Lauryn Snipes & Avery Rusk had a heck of a daywinning the league championship, beating Collegiate 6-2,6-3 who was seeded second and then beat McPherson who was the one seed. They played great, this is the first league champion we've had since 2009.

Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten were seeded third and finished third with medals also winning their last match 6-0,6-1.

Lexi Saffell finished 4th overall at #2 singles, her first match was a big match over McPherson. She ran out of gas in the end in her final match but played well.

Abby Lowe went 2-1 on the day good for 5th place. Her second was was pretty impressive winning 9-1 over a decent Augusta player.

Proud of the team today - we probably helped ourselves heading into Regionals. Hopefully we can get everyone seeded with a decent seed come Friday out at Pratt.

The Wellington Crusaders dropped to 0-5 on the season Friday at Collegiate, falling to the Spartans by the final score of 52-0. After a nice return by sophomore Julian Jimenez (50 yds) on the opening kickoff, the Crusaders were unable to move the ball with any consistency and had difficulties stopping Collegiates' ground game and air assault. Prior to the Spartan's JV squad coming in, Collegiate had completed 17 of 19 passes for "5" TD's. It was a long night for the Crusaders on both sides of the ball. Total offense for Wellington was 91 yds (70 rushing / 21 receiving). Wellington had 3 first downs to Collegiate's 11. QB Cade Phelps left the game just prior to halftime with a concussion. For assurance, Cade was taken to a local Wichita hospital by private car as no ambulance or other medical assistance was available at Collegiate.

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
@ Circle HS
Wednesday, September 28, 2016

On Wednesday the team traveled to Circle for a makeup meet.

Playing #1 singles was Lexi Saffell who was seeded 4th overall out of 6 players. Lexi won her opening match 8-4 over Dashner from El Dorado. Then she played state medalist Fugit from Andover Central and lost 1-8. In her final match Saffell played the #2 seed White from Buhler and won 8-4 to take 3rd. Lexi did very well today that Buhler match was a good win.

Madison Lewellen played #2 singles and won her opener 8-1 over Taylor from Neodesha. She then dropped a heartbreaker to Wicks from Circle in a tiebreak. In her final match she lost to Page from Andover Central which placed her 4th.

One of the other highlights of the day was the #1 doubles team of Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten. The pair got the #3 seed and won their opening match over Circle 8-1. In their next match they had to play a Andover Central team that has had a great season so far. Wellington took the lead and kept it close then won 8-5. In the finals they played a familiar opponent in Buhler. Buhler beat Wellington 8-2 in the first meet of the year. This time the tides turned and Adams & Aufdengarten won 8-5 to win the championship. It was good to beat them finally at #1 doubles, we haven't beaten them in about six years.

At #2 doubles Lauryn Snipes & Avery Rusk lost their opening match to Andover Central 5-8. The pair then had a bye and then beat El Dorado 8-1 to finish 3rd overall. It was nice to bring home several medals in the last two days. League tennis is next Monday at Buhler and regionals at Pratt next Friday and Saturday.

#2 singles was Madison Lewellen who cruised in her pool play matches winning 7-0 over Nickerson, and 7-0 over Valley Center. In her final match she dropped it to Mann from Buhler 4-7, to finish 2nd overall.

#1 doubles Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten won over Nickerson 7-0, but then dropped their second match to Valley Center 4-7. This put them against Kingman and the pair won 7-1 to take 3rd.

At #2 doubles the same type of thing happened where Lauryn Snipes & Avery Rusk won their first match over Nickerson 7-0, then dropped a 4-7 match against Buhler. In their final match they won 7-0 over Haven to finish 3rd also.

(Coach Aufdengarten filed this report...)

It was a long day, got there at 7:00 am and Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten got off their last match about 8:30 pm. Everyone else started but didn't get to finish with the rain moving in. If you weren't in the top 16 then you were done. Believe there was 36 singles players and 36 doubles teams.

Abby Lowe lost her first match to Cadman from Independent 4-8.Then she won over Wolke from Conway and Ford from Parsons. She finished 2-1 before the rains cancelled the rest of her meet.

Lexi Saffell lost to Watson from Goddard Ike 3-8, then lost to Parrish from Blue Valley NW. Her next match she was up on Carlson from McPherson 4-1, then the rains came and she never got to finish the match.

Madison Lewellen and Jacelyn Buck lost to Blue Valley 3-8, and lost a closer match to Andover 5-8. They also never got to play a third match.

Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten won their first match 8-2 over McPherson, a very good win. They then lost to Hesston who loaded up their doubles team with their one singles player and half their team that finished second at state last year. We got waxed, they were very good, best team we've played this year. The pair then lost to Kapaun 8-5. We were tied 5-5 then had a rain delay and after the delay never won another game. The pair then beat Goddard Ike 8-4, and lost to last years 5Astate runner ups 6-8, after a 4 1/2 hour break between matches. The pair placed 14th.

vs ANDALE - HERE
Friday, September 23, 2016

The undefeated Andale Indians were at Sellers Friday evening for week 4 varsity football action. Wellington, at 0-3 going in had their hands full with a football program that has excelled for many years now. With a final score of 47-7 one would think nothing positive happened on the evening but don't think that for a minute. The Crusaders never did quit, the attitude on the sideline was one of grit and determination to stay the course and give the Indians their best shot. Their were signs of improvement and with "3" varsity players now out with injury (Lukas Soria, Connor Burnett and Aaron Shoemann), the remaining contingent stood tall and fought back as hard as they could. A late game TD by seniors Chris Kop and a Colton Glover extra point kick removed the goose egg from the scoreboard and in the opinion of this writer, symbolically stated - we are on our way back folks...the road is long but the direction is true. I was proud of our boys, their attitude and their spunkiness was notable, again, against a formidable foe with deep talent and tradition. Andale scored every quarter, leading 40-0 at halftime. Overall, the Crusaders had 160 yds of total offense, 82 rushing and 78 passing. Cade Phelps completed 6 of 12, with 4 receptions for 46 yds for Joe Ybarra, 1 for 25 yds for Jack Walton (a beautiful catch right down the middle of the field) and 1 for 7 yds for DeAndre Washington. Chris Kop rushed for 52 yds including the 25 yd TD run, Deyton Arajuo 5 carries for 34 yds, Colton Glover 10 carries for 13 yds,, QB Cade Phelps 3 carries for 1 yd and Trayson Probst 1 for -18 yds (result of an errant snap on a punt). Andale put up 355 yds total, 40 of that in the air, 315 on the ground. There was a running clock beginning early in the 3rdwhich of course would reduce the offensive opportunities for both. Andale had 12 first downs to Wellington's 8. No additional significant injuries occurred so onward and upward Crusaders! Next up, there, COLLEGIATE.

Newton - 8
Augusta - 5
Neodesha - 0

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
#1 singles Lexi Saffell lost to Hammer from Winfield 1-8. Then received a bye and finished with a win over Werner from Augusta 8-4. Lexi was the #5 seed and finished 5th. This was her first meet playing singles this season and did well.

#2 singles Jacelyn Buck received the #1 seed and beat Tigner from Neodesha 8-0, then Cusick from Collegiate 8-2. In the championship match she lost to Nihart from Winfield 3-8. Jacelyn was rewarded with a good seed because she played so well last week at Ark City. Just ran into a steady player in her last match.

#1 doubles Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten turned in a good performance going 3-0 on the day. The pair beat Newton 8-1, then played Goddard a team that had beaten Adams and Aufdengarten in a tiebreak last Thursday. This time the Crusader team won 8-6 in a close match over the #2 seeded Goddard. Then in the championship match The Wellington pair played their best match of the season beating #1 seeded Salina Central 8-2.

#2 doubles Lauryn Snipes & Avery Rusk had a solid outing also. They were the #5 seed and avenged a loss they had also last Thursday over Winfield winning 8-2. In their next match they almost beat #1 seeded Goddard, but lost in a tiebreak. That match was so close that same team beat us last week 8-3. Then the pair played the #2 seed from Salina Central for 3rd/4th. Snipes and Rusk prevailed with an 8-6 score. They played good today, much better, they are eager to learn from some of their mistakes and have worked on some adjustments Coach Aufdengarten added.

Rose Hill 14 Wellington 26

The WHS Sub-Varsity Football squad found success Monday evening vs their counterparts from Rose Hill. The younger Crusaders controlled the tempo and the eventual outcome throughout most of the contest, a very hot and humid event (and no wind!) ugh! Anyways, great night for Wellington boys - great effort by all, scoring-wise it was Hunter Greenlee, Trayson Probst, Michael Ledbetter and Silas Popplewell with TD's...credit Blake Rausch with the 2 pt. conversion. Credit the whole squad though, it takes a team to help get those guys into the end zone and the "team" did just that Monday evening! Great Job Crusaders! Onward and upward - together!

WHS VARSITY FOOTBALL
@ Rose Hill
Friday, September 16, 2016

0-2 Wellington paid a visit to 0-2 Rose Hill Friday night, both teams in the hunt for their first "W's" of the season. Rose Hill hadn't actually had a "W" since the 2014 season. After a nearly scoreless game, the Rockets would prevail, despite opportunities for the Crusaders late. Rose Hill 07 Wellington 06. As in previous outings this season, the IRONDUKES shot themselves in the foot with numerous penalties and less than desired "fire" at times.

A 4th qtr score did revive the Wellington boys a bit but down the stretch they couldn't bring home the "W" as time ran out. Colton Glover rushed the ball 19 times for 87 yds, Chris Kop 13 carries for 50 yds, Cade Phelps 7/3 yds, Deyton Araujo 1/0 yds and De Andre Washington 1/5 yds. Cade Phelps was 8/25 for 134 yds passing - DeAndre Washington caught 4 for 79 yds, one a 49 yd TD reception in the 4th qtr. Joe Ybarra snagged 1 for 23 yds and Jack Walton 2/22 yds. Colton Glover added 10 yds receiving to bring his total offensive production to just shy of 100 yds on the evening.

It doesn't get any easier for the Crusaders any time soon. This coming Friday, Andale will be visiting Sellers Park after a 61-52 victory over Mulvane this week. The following week Collegiate and then Scott City here for Homecoming on Oct. 7th. Those "3" teams combined for 158 points and 3 victories this week. Wellington's 0-3 start is the slowest start for the IRONDUKES since 2012, (Coach Tyler Ryan's first season) when the Crusaders went 0-4 (losing to Goddard, Concordia, Augusta and Collegiate) before winning on the road at Coach Ryan's alma mater Circle week 5.

Wellington 31
Sterling 29
Larned 21
Greeley County 20
Chaparral 20
Pratt 19
Kingman 16
Lyons 2

#1 Singles Abby Lowe 3-1 2nd place finish, lost to Thrasher from Sterling in the finals. Thrasher was 3rd at 3A state tournament last season. Abby did very well in pool play beating three solid players.

#1 Doubles Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten went 4-0 good for first place. They played good, Mekenna did real well at the net. The pair only gave up 4 games, going 32-4 on the day.

#2 Doubles Lexi Saffell & Jacelyn Buck also went 4-0 good for first place. These two played well and got better each match. They had their best match in the championship beating Greeley County 8-2.

#2 Singles Natalie Henning went 1-3 in her first varsity action.Natalie lost two close matches in pool play 5-8, and 6-8. Natalie was the last match to finish on the day beating Lyons 8-4. It was pretty awesome she never gave up and with that last win gave us the team title.

Coach Aufdengarten was happy after the matches - "I said we probably wouldn't win many meets because of us always changing our lineup, but we have won our first three varsity meets. The girls are competing well."

WHS VARSITY FOOTBALL
@ El Dorado
Saturday, Sep. 10, 2016
(Make-Up from Friday due to weather)

The Wellington Crusader vs El Dorado Wildcat Week #2 football game was postponed Friday evening due to the weather conditions and played today (Saturday) at noon at the BG Products Veteran Stadium in El Dorado in front of a relatively equal sized crowd for both the home Wildcats and the visiting IRONDUKES.

There was plenty of evidence of the heavy rains received the last part of the work week, with flood waters nipping at the turnpike right-of-way just north of the Belle Plaine service center on Saturday, both on the way to El Dorado and on the way back. That particular area was being monitored closely by KTA officials in case the stretch of road needed to be closed. Basically just water everywhere!

Both teams came in to Saturday's contest at 0-1 and through the first quarter it looked like a battle would ensue to the end. Miscues and penalties would hamper the Crusader's progress however and prevent any change to the win column this week and the Wildcats would eventually prevail 34-18. There were some outstanding plays, both defensive and offensive, but never quite enough to sufficiently light up the scoreboard. QB Cade Phelps connected on a couple long passes to Colton Glover (41 yarder) and DeAndre Washington (56 yarder) with scoring coming on "3" rushes, "2" by QB Phelps and "1" by Glover...the latter was Crusader football at it's best...Colton carried about a half dozen El Dorado defenders from the 10 yd line to paydirt, much to the delight of the Crusader fans. El Dorado tipped the scales on total offense as well, but not by much. The Wildcats had 208 yds rushing and 130 yds passing (338) to Wellington's 154 yds rushing and 159 yds passing (313). El Dorado was intercepted twice, Wellington once.

Here's how that broke out on the Wellington side of the ball:Colton Glover carried the ball 18 times for 55 yds and the 1 TD. Chris Kop 10 / 53 yds, Deyton Araujo 7 / 33 yds and Cade Phelps 6 / 13 yds and the 2 rushing TD's. "3" PAT attempts failed. In passing, Phelps completed 5 for a 159 yds, Joe Ybarra was on the receiving end of 3 of those for 62 yds, De Andre Washington 1 / 56 yds and Glover 1 / 41 yds. Wellington would have 16 first downs on the day, El Dorado 21.

In the punting department, Trayson Probst had 3 successful puntsfor a total of 81 yds (27 yd avg) but had trouble handling the snap on a 4th punt which resulted in a fumble and a 20 yd loss. Next up for the Crusaders will Rose Hill - there on Friday the 16th.
