WHS VARSITY SOFTBALL
@ State 4A Tournament (Salina)
Friday, May 27th, 2016

After a 24 hour rain delay, the 2016 State 4A Softball Tournamentgot underway Friday instead of Thursday and by Saturday, the 2016 State 4A Softball Champion had emerged. The WHS Lady Crusaders lost a heart breaker in Salina Friday evening after waiting an extra day + to play in this year's wet State 4A Softball Tournament. After falling behind early, the Lady Crusaders chipped away at the deficit but in the end Independence slammed the door and prevailed 11-7.
Congratulations on a great and WHS record-breaking 17-6 season!Congratulations on continuing a great tradition this year too - that being if you're on a girls team at WHS you went to STATE!! (Volleyball, Girls Tennis, Basketball and Softball - all State Qualifiers this school year!!) I'm not sure ANY other school in Kansas can make that claim for 2015-16, public or private!

WE ARE PROUD OF THE LADY CRUSADERS!

Here are the teams that were involved and their outcomes at the tournament:
#8 seed - Hays HS - Lost to #1 seed KC Piper 10-5
#4 seed - Wellington - Lost to #5 seed Independence 11-7
#7 seed - Baldwin HS - Lost to #2 seed Spring Hill 6-0
#6 seed - Eudora HS - Lost to #3 seed Augusta 1-0

#1 seed - KC Piper - defeated #5 seed Independence 3-1
#2 seed - Spring Hill - defeated #3 seed Augusta 2-1
(8 innings)

FOR 3rd Place:

REGIONAL 4A SOFTBALL & BASEBALL
Wednesday, May 18, 2016

The now 17-5 Lady Crusader Softball Gals are 4A State Tournament bound!!

Congratulations to Coach Buck and the crew who defeated Mulvane in 5 innings (15-5) in the Regional 4A opener this afternoon out at Worden Park. The bats came alive and starting pitcher Brooke McCorkle went the distant in the shortened run-rule contest. Credit Baylee DeJarnett with a HOME RUN as well!

In the nightcap Championship game vs Winfield, it was Madi Lewellen on the mound and she would stay there for the duration. The Lady Vikings jumped out 1-0 early though when their first batter knocked one out. The score stayed 1-0 until the 6th inning when an Avery Rusk sacrifice bunt moved Madi Adams into scoring position at 2nd and eventually scored to knot it at 1 a piece. Ryleigh Buck would smack a HOMER and make it 2-1 and then Gracie Fink slid safely into HOME for the 3rd run on an RBI double by Erin Goodrum. Ta-duh!!! REGIONAL 4A CHAMPIONS!!!

In Winfield, at the 4A BASEBALL REGIONAL, the Crusaders jumped out on Mulvane and sustained the lead behind starting pitcher Therin Frame who went nearly 6 innings until relieved by Adam Hilt. The final was 5-2 Wellington and the Crusaders find themselves in the REGIONAL 4A Championship Game vs Rose Hill, the #1 seed.

Wellington made a statement first when Connor Phelps on the first pitch of the game busted a triple down the right field line, sliding into 3rd just beating the throw. Cameron Bartelson would get him in to score on a Fielder's Choice and Wellington went up 1-0 in the 1st. Almost like the girls game, the score stayed the same until the 5th inning when the Rockets put up 3 runs to pull ahead 3-1. The Rockets would score another in the 6th and you could feel the game slipping away. There were some awesome moments in the nightcap nonetheless, including a throw from left field by Skyler Struble to get a Rocket guy out at 2nd. Third baseman Chevy Nuss threw a steely eyed bullet to HOME to relieve a Rocket runner of his scoring duties. Cade Phelps went the distance on the mound for the Championship Final and added a double as well.

It was a day of GOOD BASEBALL...and a day of VERY GOOD SOFTBALL and a group of girls representing WHS are returning to State 4A action for the 4th time this school year - VOLLEYBALL * GIRLS TENNIS * BASKETBALL and now SOFTBALL! That deserves another ta-duh! TA-DUH!! Makes you proud don't it?

STATE 4A BOYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT
@ Topeka , Friday, May 13, 2016

BROCK EDWARDS: First Round- Beat Kyle Hutley/Parsons 6-4, 7-5; Second Round- Lost to 3 time defending State Champion Tommy Hunter/Topeka Haydon 6-0, 6-0; Consolation Bracket- Lost to Auggie Lange/Baldwin 9-5 and was eliminated. Tommy Hunter went on to win the Championship to become only the 4th person in Kansas history to win the title four consecutive years in a row. 4A had about 8 remarkably talented singles players this year and Brock would have had to win his match against Lange and another match against Renton Williams from Andover Central in order to have the chance to compete for a top 12 finish, who all receive medals.

Had to forfeit #2 Dubs due to illness. Very tough competition at this tournament… my prediction is that a state doubles champion and possibly state singles champion will be from either Wichita Collegiate or McPherson… both schools in our League!"

JV AVCTL LEAGUE BOYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT
in McPherson (042816)
In a last minute move, Coach Keller put James Hinman at the top spot and asked him to step up and play #1 singles for us. With only a 2/2 Win/Loss record, James was able to get the 5th seed. Coach Keller reported that, "James showed a lot of character and determination and after losing a tough 1st round match to a good player from Winfield 8-4 (after leading early 4-3) he came back and won 2 matches on the back side and secured a 5th place finish for us."

With only 5 guys able to play, Wellington had to forfeit the #2 Singles spot. #1 Doubles team of Michael Billington and Dakota Lynnes also got a 5th seed, lost the first round match to the 4th seeded team from Winfield (who finished 3rd) then won one/lost one on the back side for a 6th place finish.

But the thrill of the day for almost everyone at the tournament was when the 8th seeded #2 Wellington Doubles team of Bryce Gilbreth and Drake Alcorn, who came into the tournament with a 0 Win/16 Loss record won their final match of the season with a convincing 8-2 victory and Drake put his hands in the air and yelled “Coach, WE WON!!!” and their team mates stormed the court to congratulate them. Coach Keller reports, "There was not a player from any school there that wanted to win a match as much as Drake and Bryce, or who fought and tried harder… even after 18 consecutive losses. Even though they finished 6th as a team, there was not a prouder coach walking off the court with his team than Wellington."

Wow, what a way to end a JV season… Coach Keller's parting remark - "thanks guys for the memory!!!"

WHS BASEBALL
vs Andale (Make-Up)
Thursday, April 14, 2016

In Varsity Action at Hibbs Hooten Field, the Crusaders scored a run in the 3rd and held that lead until the 6th, when the Indians scored a tying run and then the winning run in the 7th to down the Crusaders 2-1 in the opener. Cade Phelps went the distance on the mound for Wellington, taking the loss, giving up 7 hits, the 2 runs, he also walked 4 and struck out 6. The Crusaders had 4 hits – Connor and Cade Phelps and Adam Hilt each had a single, Wesley Gilmore connected for a double.

In the nightcap, just 1 hit and 4 errors spelled doom for the Crusaders, the Indians scored in every inning of the 5 inning run-rule game, leading 9-2 after 2 and then after 5, 16-2 and the win for the visitors. Several Crusaders would pitch in the nightcap, Adam Hilt, Wesley Gilmore, Chanz Daugherty and Dylan Jones. Combined they allowed 15 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2. Hilt would take the loss. The lone hit by the Crusaders was by Trey Cary, a single.

Outcomes weren’t any rosier for the JV, they fell to Andale 2-13 and 1-5 at the 9th St. Diamond.

The Varsity Crusaders fall to 2-8 on the season. Next up is BUHLER, HERE, this coming Monday beginning at 4PM at Hibbs-Hooten and 9th St. - Monday will also be SENIOR NIGHT for both the baseball and softball seniors.

#1 Singles: Brock Edwards took 6th place (Lost to Farris/Goddard Ike 8-5, beat Williams/Andover Central 8-3, lost to Pheifer Maize 8-3)

#2 Singles: Will Long took 4th place (Beat Stoner Hesston 8-2, lost to Dunn/Derby 8-2, lost to Fernandez/Collegiate 8-3

#1 Doubles: Jaden Adams & Reece Langford took 8th place (Lost to Cuillo & Hane/Kapaun Mt. Carmel 8-3, lost to Wall & Dunn/Derby 8-3, lost to Barber & Morales/Hesston 8-4)

#2 Doubles: James Hinman & Jared Oathout took 8th place (Lost to Cole & Rollins/Maize 8-4, lost to Decker & Boles/Hesston 8-7, lost to Knorp & Richardson/Kapaun Mt. Carmel 8-3)

First time these doubles combos have played together, but think we’re going to stick with it and try to develop some chemistry between partners. Even though

they had a tough go, both 1 and 2 dubs were competitive and lost some close matches that could have gone our way. Brock and Will both played improved tennis

and are going to get better and have more success as the season progresses. Everyone came away bruised and bloody… but with our heads held high!

WHS VARSITY SOFTBALL @ Rose Hill
GAME #1: WGTN 13 R.HILL 08
Madi Lewellen WP
GAME #2: WGTN 11 R. Hill 01
Brooke McCorkle WP

The Lady Crusaders scored 10 of their 13 runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings combined in Game #1 to secure the deal and the win over the Lady Rockets 13-8. Madi Lewellen went the distance for the win, allowing 15 hits and struck out 5. The Ladies put up 17 hits with Erin Goodrum going 4/5 with a double, Avery Rusk 3/5 with a double, Ryleigh Buck 3/4 with a double and a triple and Madi Adams & Brooke McCorkle each 2/4, the former with a triple.

In the nightcap, the bats remained hot. With Brooke McCorkle on the mound, the Ladies put points on the board 5 of the 7 innings played to win 11-1 with 13 hits and no errors. At the bat, Baylee DeJarnett went 2/5, both doubles, Ryleigh Buck with 2/3 with a double and a triple, Jacelyn Buck went 2/4, Abby Goodrum 2/3 with a triple and Madi Adams 2/4 with a big ole Home Run! McCorkle went the distance as well, allowing just 2 hits, walked 2 and fanned 4.

GAME #1: WGTN 00 R.HILL 15

GAME #2: WGTN 02 R. Hill 12

Not a good outing for the Crusaders. Rose Hill run ruled Wellington in 3 innings, 15-0, pounding out 17 hits vs just 1 for the Crusaders. (a single by Cameron Bartelson) Taking the loss for Wellington was Chevy Nuss who gave up 7 hits and 7 runs. In relief, Arlis Troutman gave up 10 hits and 8 additional runs. The Crusaders also committed 3 fielding errors.

In the nightcap, final score after 5 innings, Rose Hill 12 Wellington 2. Again, a strong start for the Rockets who put runs on the board 4 of the 5 innings played and held Wellington to 6 hits coupled with 8 fielding errors. Noah Rinehart took the loss, allowing 4 hits and 10 runs. In relief, Dylan Jones allowed 3 hits and 2 runs. Each walked 3 and Jones fanned 1. WHS VARSITY BOYS TENNIS @ Andover
Varsity Tennis Boys did well Thursday at Andover. With only 2 tournaments under our belt and therefore not much of a record against quality players to use for seeding, all our entries got the #8 seed out of 8 teams. Brock Edwards finished 6th and got a good win over a good Hesston player, Daniel Holthus in the process. Will Long finished in 1st Place taking home the Gold medal in #2 Singles. Will played remarkably well and got the attention of not only all the players he competed against but also many coaches commented on his ability to keep the ball in play and hit consistent shots. It was billed as a “Doubles tournament” with many good area doubles teams competing and it held up to that. Both our #1 and #2 Doubles teams competed well but are pretty inexperienced and it showed against the seasoned teams they played against. However, both won their final matches of the day against Wichita Independent teams and finished 7th.

WHS BASEBALL vs COLLEGIATE
Game #1: Collegiate 00 Wellington 06
Game #2: Collegiate 06 Wellington 04
In the opener Monday, the Crusaders jumped out early on the Collegiate Spartans, scoring 2 in the 1st, then 3 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to seal the 6-0 deal and give Collegiate their 4th loss of the season. Wesley Gilmore and Therin Frame lead the Crusaders in hitting, going 3 for 4 and 3 for 3 respectively. Adam Hilt grabbed the win on the mound, going 6 innings (Dylan Jones came in, in relief 7th inning) allowing only 3 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. This win moved the season tally to 2-3 with the nightcap still ahead. In that nightcap, a big 5th inning (5 runs) for the Spartans would spoil the Crusaders chance for a sweep on the evening. Down 5-1, the boys in red tried to claw their way back but came up short in the end, 4-6 and move their season tally to 2-4, same for Collegiate. Cameron Bartelson lead in hitting, going 2 for 4. Therin Frame took the loss for the Crusaders, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing 5 hits, 5 runs, walked 1 and fanned 7. In relief (2.1 innings), Chantz Daugherty allowed 4 hits and a run, walking 1 and striking out 4. The Crusaders will be on the road this Thursday at Rose Hill. Between the games on Monday, members of the 1995 WHS State Championship Baseball Team were honored, including their Coach, Bill Shaw. The Crusaders won 19 games that year and still hold numerous WHS records 21 years later. This reunion was slated twice last season but both times weather created problems. The weather couldn't have been any better this go-round. Congratulations 1995 Crusaders - you certainly made your mark and then some!

WHS SOFTBALL @ EL DORADO
Game #1: Wellington 15 El Dorado 06
Game #2: Wellington 17 El Dorado 07

The Lady Crusaders were on the road Monday (Collegiate doesn't have a softball team or JV boys team) to El Dorado and came away with two relatively easy wins to extend their season record to 6-0. In the opener, El Dorado jumped out to a 2-1 lead after 1 but that lead would be shortlived after a 5 run 2nd inning for Wellington and a 6 run 4th inning! The Lady Crusaders would get 11 hits (Avery Rusk 1/4 - DBL, Baylee DeJarnett 2/5, Ryleigh Buck 2/3, Brooke McCorkle 3/5 - DBL, HR, Jacelyn Buck 2/4 and Madi Adams 1/4 - DBL). Madi Lewellen would get the win, pitching a complete 7 inning game, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs, walked 2 and fanned 4. In the nightcap, El Dorado jumped out again on top and lead 6-3 after just 1 inning...that lead again, would disappear quickly as the Lady Crusaders added runs in subsequent innings except the 4th, to easily win in the end 17-7. The BIG RED bats continued to work hard, the team adding 15 more hits to their repertoire! (Avery Rusk 1/5, Baylee DeJarnett 2/5 - DBL, Ryleigh Buck 2/2 - 2 DBL, Jacelyn Buck 2/6, Madi Lewellen 4/5 - 2 DBL, Taylor Zimmerman 2/4 and Madi Adams 2/4). Brooke McCorkle would get the win in Game #6 of the season, allowing 6 hits and 7 runs, walked 3 and struck out 2. Congratulations to the Lady Crusaders - they will be on the road again this Thursday in Rose Hill!

STATE 4A GIRLS BASKETBALL @ SALINA
Saturday, March 12, 2016

WELLINGTON 65 LABETTE COUNTY 62
25+ foot 3 pointer BUZZER BEATER by Junior Lauryn Snipes sealed the deal Saturday afternoon at the State 4A DIV 1 Girls Basketball Tournament. With just a few seconds left in the third place contest, Shayland French blocked a Labette shot, passed it to Lauryn who charged past the half court line, several feet short of the 3 point line and put up a beauty - the buzzer was sounding as it SWIIIIIISSSSSHHHHHEEEEEDDDD through the net! Awesome!

After a frustrating loss to Paola on Friday in semi-final action, the Lady Crusaders and Labette County were slated for battle in the consolation 3rd place contest Saturday at noon at the STATE 4A DIV 1 GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT in Salina at the Bicentennial Center. No one knew when this third place game got underway, it would be tied 6 times and the lead would change 10 times before an exciting ending for the girls in red as the buzzer sounded.

Wellington came out looking more relaxed perhaps and maybe too relaxed at times but kept the contest close through the first two quarters - the score at halftime Wellington 27, Labette Co 28. In that first half, the Lady Crusaders were 10/24 from the field, 3/9 on 3 pointers and 4/5 from the charity stripe. Wellington lead by as many as 7 in the 2nd quarter but Labette Co. would erase that lead, soon.

Labette County came out strong after the break and extended their lead to 5 points by 3rd quarter's end, Wellingotn 47 Labette 52. By the halfway point of the 4th quarter, Wellington would regain the lead and by the 1:28 mark would lead by 7! Just to keep things suspenseful, Labette battled back quickly and efficiently and at the :19 mark knotted the score at 62 each. After 2 rim-out FT attempts by Rusk, Labette snagged the rebound and advanced towards their basket but had the ball stolen away by a beautiful block and grab by Shayland French at the :6 mark, she turned and passed the ball back to Lauryn Snipes who turned and crossed half court and just a few steps further, launching a 25+ foot 3 pointer that ripped through the net like a hot knife through butter as the buzzer was sounding..PANDOMONIUM as the Lady Crusaders swarmed on the court to celebrate their 3rd place finish at the State Tournament, to celebrate their 2-1 record at the State Tournament and to celebrate their 24-1 season, a hard earned and well deserved WHS record for the books.

In the 2nd half the Lady Crusaders went 12/24 from the field, 4/9 from the 3 pt line and 10/18 from the stripe of charity! It was enough to make the most exciting finish one could imagine develop and deliver as Junior Lauryn Snipes put the smiles on everyone not from Labette with her amazing buzzer beater shot - KA BAM! Just unbelievable!! Overall, the ladies shot just under 50% from the field and just under 40% from the 3 pt line. From the freethrow line, 14/23 or 60% - all 3 categories showing improvement over their semi-final game stats from Friday.

Scoring in her last game as a Crusader, Senior Grace Mitchell had 24 points, followed by Lauryn Snipes with 16 (including that magical 3!), Shayland French 8, Tayland French 6, Avery Rusk 6, Mekenna Adams 3 and Senior Taylor Zimmerman with 2. Wellington was out rebounded by Labette 33-30 and had 15 Turnovers to Labette's 13.

Coach Eric Adams spoke very highly of his squad after the game, commended them for a remarkable and history-making season. History making in more than one way - Coach Adams was selected as the AVCTL DIV IV Coach of the Year - congratulations to him on this honor!! Also receiving honors from the league were:

FIRST TEAM
Grace Mitchell 6'2" Senior
Lauryn Snipes 6'1" Junior
Avery Rusk 5'9" Sophomore

HONORABLE MENTION
Shayland French 5'9" Sophomore
Tayland French 5'9" Junior

LEAGUE MVP
Grace Mitchell

Certainly a day none of us will forget soon, if ever. Congrats to all the honorees and special kudos to Grace Mitchell, the DIV 4 AVCTL MVP (she was the MVP DIV 1 last year at Derby)! WHS History in the making by a fine group of student-athletes, most of whom will be back next year - get ready for a fun ride again - Thank you Lady Crusaders and CONGRATULATIONS on just a superb season! AWESOME!! You won't be forgotten!!

STATE 4A GIRLS BASKETBALL PICS

STATE 4A GIRLS BASKETBALL @ SALINA
Friday, March 11, 2016
After trailing by 10 after 1 and 11 at halftime, the Lady Crusaders came out in the 2nd half on fire and climbed back to within 2 at the end of 3. Early in the 4th, at the 7:52 mark, Grace Mitchell sunk a 2 pointer to tie it up!

Paola would unfortunately pull away again
and in the end, the Lady Crusaders couldn't dig themselves out and lost their FIRST game of the season (51-64), to go to 23-1. Wellington will face Altamont-Labette County on Saturday at NOON for 3rd place honors. Labette was defeated by Bishop Miege by the final score of 54-46 so Miege and Paola will play for the State 4A Div 1 Girls Basketball Championship on Saturday at 4:00PM.

Scoring Friday for Wellington went as follows:
Grace Mitchell 18, Lauryn Snipes 18, Shayland French 6, Avery Rusk 4, Tayland French 3, Taylor Zimmerman 2. Paola shot 38 FT's to Wellington's 16 making 27 and 7 respectively. Good Luck Saturday Ladies!!

"VARSITY" GIRLS: Mulvane 46 Wellington 65
The Varsity Lady Crusaders are now 17-0 and on a roll. Off to a slow start again though and Coach Adams sat the starters down in the first quarter for approx. 4 minutes after falling behind the Lady Wildcats and failing to execute early on. The "break" served them well. In the end, 3 Ladies would score in double-figures and the outcome very favorable as the final score would indicate.
Grace Mitchell 22, Avery Rusk 15 Lauryn Snipes 11, Tayland French 6, Mariah Moore 6, Shayland French 5

"VARSITY" BOYS: Mulvane 46 Wellingotn 69
The Varsity Crusaders played well against Mulvane at Mulvane earlier in the season, that trend continued here at home on Tuesday. A slow start but total control after that, leaving the game's outcome never in question and advancing the Varsity Boys record to 9-8 on the season. A career high game for sophomores Ian King and Cade Phelps and like the Varsity Girls, the boys had "3" in double figures as well!

The WMS 8TH Grade KNIGHTS meant business at the PIONEER LEAGUE DIV IV BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS in Ark City on Monday. A rematch with the MULVANE WILDCATS from last season's championship was at hand, a different outcome was hoped for this go-round. Suffice it to say, that different outcome came to fruition - final score for the Wellington boys - WMS 54 MMS 18. Silas Popplewell and Blake Rausch lit it up, as they have both done consistently all season, the former with 20 pts., the latter with 16. Other scoreboard donors included Tyler Brown 6, Zander Vargas 5, Gage Cunningham 3, John Long 2, Zane Cornejo 2 and Malachi Macias 2. The 8th Grade KNIGHTS finish the season at 13-2 and have now won their 2nd Pioneer League DIV IV Championship this school year. Conway Springs 60 Wellington 56

Wellington didn't have as hot a hand on offense Saturday night(compared to Friday night) and as a result, despite a bold 4th qtr rally, the Crusaders were unable to pull out a "W" at the 45th annual Chaparral Roadrunner Classic. Tied at halftime and then a very strong 3rd qtr for the Cardinals, dug a hole too deep to climb out of. The clock became the 6th man for the Cardinals and fouling Conway down the stretch in hopes of getting the advantage ...well, unfortunately they made most of those 4th qtr freebies and in the end prevailed by four, 60-56. The Crusaders did pull to within 1 but Conway was able to pull away just enough and maintained the resulting margin for the victory. Wellington has won this tournament twice, in 1978 and 2014. This is Conway Springs 5th Championship hardware from the Roadrunner Classic which began back in the early 1970's shortly after Chaparral HS was constructed.

SCORING: A.J. Snipes 15, Ian King 12, Cade Phelps 10, Wesley Gilmore 9, Connor Phelps 6, Therin Frame 2

The Crusaders jumped on Clearwater Friday evening early and sustained a comfortable margin throughout the entire game. In the first quarter, A.J. Snipes was on fire, hitting three "3's" and helping the team extend their lead over the Indians to 26-13 after 1. Snipes ended up with 27 points, a career high, which included 10 free throws out of only11 attempts. Phenomenal! The Crusaders as a team sunk eight "3's" on the evening, the 3 from A.J., Cade Phelps also had 3, Connor Phelps and Therin Frame each had 1. The Crusaders were also on fire from the charity stripe making 24 of 29. In the 4th quarter alone, the Crusaders were 17 of 24 from the line. In addition to A.J.'s 10, Wesley Gilmore went 6 for 6 and Cade Phelps 2 for 2. That's some good shooting, from the field and from the line.

Other scoring: Connor Phelps 14, Ian King 13, Cade Phelps 13, Wesley Gilmore 6 and Therin Frame with 3 - add A.J.'s 27 and there ya go. 76-64

Double Dual w/ Mulvane
Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016

Wellington 39 Mulvane 37
What a dual for Wellington vs Mulvane. It all started with Tim Schmidt (106) and Mitch Gould (113) starting the night off with big PINS for WHS! Then at (120),Daniel Schmidt pinned his opponent (the same opponent by the way that beat Daniel last year and knocked him out of the Regional!) Kadin Heacock (126) won 5-1, then Andrew Wolf (132) won BY PIN after being behind in the match. SCORE at this point - Wellington 27 Mulvane 00. The next "5" weights are tough ones - Mulvane has several wrestlers in those weights ranked in the State 4A. WHS's Ryan Olson, Nick Hawkins and Colton Glover lost by pins. WHS was open at (160). Going into the (170) match, WHS is up 27-24. WHS' Aaron Schoemann went up against Logan Elliott, a wrestler that had beat WHS's last year State Medalist Andrew Pelkey several times. Schoemann lost 12-0 but not getting pinned by Elliott was huge for Wellington score-wise. Then Ian Groom (182) lost 10-5 but was again a huge match for WHS that Ian didn't get pinned. At (195), WHS's Jason Norris pinned his opponent with less than a minute left in his match. Jace Lowe (220) was pinned. Going into the HWT match of the evening, Wellington's (285) Miguel Lujan had to get a tech fall or a pin for Wellington to win, down 37-33 at that juncture. After being in some trouble in the match, Lujan in a scramble, came out on top with his opponent on his hip - Lujan was able to PIN the opponent and secure the team win for the Crusaders! AWESOME!!!

VARSITY GIRLS
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
WHS 56 CSHS 52

It was GAME 3 time at the Kingman Eagle Classic, the Championship Girls game to be more specific and Wellington was in the thick of it after defeating Kingman and Conway Springs earlier in the week. The Lady Crusaders kept it close in the first half, after some very hot 3 point shooting by Sterling and the temporary benching of Senior Grace Mitchell who found herself with 3 fouls about halfway through the 2nd qtr. Wellington went to the locker room Saturday night at halftime, down only 33-36. The team seemed relaxed and better able to play within themselves, compared to their first two outings of the tournament and season. They prevailed in those first two outings for sure but the product had a little more shine to it this third time around.

Wellington came out on fire the third quarter, outscoring Sterling 15-6 and taking a 6 pt lead into the final stretch, a lead they would not relinquish. It was a competitve quarter but as the clock ticked down it became apparent which bus the big hardware would be on at departure time from the 2015 Kingman Eagle Classic. Final Score: Wellington 56 Sterling 52 // Individual scoring honors for game 3 go to Lauryn Snipes who pumped in 23 pts. followed by Grace Mitchell with 20, Shayland French with 6, Taylor Zimmerman with 4 and Avery Rusk with 3.

Congratulations Lady Crusaders! Off to a 3-0 start and a tournament championship to boot! Awesome!! The Lady Crusaders move to 3-0 on the season - Andale next on Tuesday!

VARSITY BOYS
3RD PLACE GAME
WHS 53 HHS 60 OT

Earlier in the afternoon, the Crusaders went up against Haven for 3rd place honors on the boy's side and played very well, finding themselves up 45-33 after 3 qtrs. much to the credit of Sophomores Cade Phelps and A.J. Snipes. Wellington's 6' 6" Ian King was out with 5 fouls and Senior guard Wesley Gilmore on the bench second half with a shoulder issue resulting from a play earlier in the contest. Wellington's lead deteriorated quickly but were able to hang on at the end of 4, by tying it up and sending it on to OT! Haven took control in the extra period, scoring 7 to the Crusaders 0 - final score Haven 60 Wellington 53. Wellington finished fourth out of 6 teams and is 1-2 on the season now.

SCORING: Cade Phelps 17, A.J. Snipes 16, Ian King 8, Connor Phelps 5, Wesley Gilmore 3, Will Long 2, Connor Burnett 2

*The Crusader JV Boys took on Haven Saturday afternoon as well,in a close battle the younger Crusaders came up just 2 pts. short, losing to Haven JV 40-42. Therin Frame lead in scoring with 15, followed by Chaese Hamel 11, DeAndre Washington 4, Jack Walton 4, Carson LeGrand 3 and Brock Edwards 3. The JV Boys move to 2-1 on the season.

Both the Lady Crusaders and Crusaders will be on the road Tuesday at Andale. The Wellington squads will wrap up their pre-holiday schedule at Mulvane on Friday the 18th.

WHS VARSITY FOOTBALL
vs Ulysses (HERE) (District Playoff Game #3)
Friday, Oct. 30, 2015

There were possibly more bodies on the gridiron than in the stands Friday evening at Sellers Park for WEEK 9 and district playoff action. The Ulysses Tigers were in town and provided about half the crowd as Wellington hoped to rebound from their loss last week to Mulvane and possibly move on to post-season play for the first time since the fall of 2010. No rebound detected - the season has ended for the IRONDUKES.

The rain throughout the contest and probably the ROYALS vs METS game kept folks away - the concession stand commonly cooks as many as a 1,000 hamburgers or more, about 10-15% of that amount hit the grill throughout the evening Friday. A rather odd atmosphere the whole evening - rain fell at various levels throughout the afternoon and evening and with so few people in the stands, the atmosphere and surroundings seemed surreal at times.

The rain didn't halt the pre-game SENIOR NIGHT activities though - this year's seniors from the FALL SPORTS groups and others were honored in the traditional presentation on the field with parents and participants. Those pics are included with the game action pics so check 'em out! Might as well tell you now, some interesting pics - the rain tends to add special effects not intended sometimes so they are what they are! It was hard keeping the lens clear and the camera itself dry so content to get what we got considering Mother Nature's overbearing presence! :)

The final score in the contest was Ulysses 36 Wellington 06 - Ulysses, along with Mulvane will advance past week #9, Wellington and Rose Hill will not. Mulvane defeated Rose Hill 46-00.

Not a productive evening offense-wise for the Crusaders. As a team, only 167 yds total production (125 Rushing + 42 Passing). Connor Phelps in his last game as a Crusader, carried the ball 17 times for 83 yds including Wellington's only score - a 33 yd. scamper late in the game to remove the goose egg from the board. Connor, unofficially finished the 9 game season with 1,183 yds on the ground. Congratulations Crusader - this achievement and numerous others this season were awesome - Connor was a workhorse and was called upon in a variety of ways! His presence was felt and significant. Logan Jones carried the ball 14 times for 46 yds. Others: Dylan Goodman 4/9 yds. * Chris Kop 1/ -1 yd.* Dylan Ferguson 1 / -3 yds. * Cade Phelps 7 / -9 yds.

Passing yardage was limited too. Cade Phelps completed 5 for 29 yds. and Connor Phelps completed 1 for 13 yds. On the receiving end, Connor snagged 4 for 27 yds total, Joe Ybarra 1 for 13 yds and Logan Jones 1 for 2 yds.

Connor Phelps punted the ball 5 times for 143 yds total (29 yd. avg).

WHS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
@ Saline (4A State Tournament)
Friday, Oct. 30, 2015

It took 28 seasons since the WHS Volleyball Program came into fruition (1988-89) but what a "fun" 28th season it turned out to be. All these young former Lady Knights, now Lady Crusaders who for several years have spent hours and hours on the courts, during the season, during the off-season, whenever - were finally at the final stop - the State 4A Tournament! They're good friends and they were growing up together playing a game they all enjoyed tremendously and almost always with smiles on their faces. The cycle was complete.

After an up and down season we all remember the determination and glory at Winfield HS last weekend at the 4A Sub-State Tournament - the Lady Crusaders handed both opponents 2 set victories and all of a sudden found themselves boarding the boat to the biggest dance ever - a boat that'd been sitting at the dock for almost 3 decades now.

A large contingent of Crusader fans including parents, students and WHS staff were on hand for all the action at Salina as Wellington prepared to go up against 3 higher seeded teams in POOL PLAY on Friday with the hopes of moving on to Saturday play and the Championship Brackets.

First up for the Lady Crusaders who were seeded 8th would be #1 seed McPherson who had over 30 wins on the season and presented a tough target to overcome but our ladies battled hard. We lost in two sets but not by much - final scores in the 2 set loss were 19-25 and 22-25.

The 2nd match on slate for POOL PLAY action would be #4 seed Tonganoxie. The Lady Chieftains had shown their prowess in their first match with Andale, coming back from a large deficit to defeat the Lady Indians. They would present a challenge to the Lady Cruaders as well. Wellington would lose it's 2nd "2 set match" on the day, falling 18-25, 11-25. Wellington would not now advance to bracket play on Saturday...you needed to win 2 of 3 matches on Friday and it wasn't meant to be.

It wasn't meant to be for the Andale Indians either who would be Wellington's 3rd and final POOL PLAY opponent...both had pride to play for and both squads played hard. The Lady Crusaders jumped out on fire and won set 1 by the tallyof 25-22 but lost their edge in sets 2 and 3, falling to the Lady Indians 16-25, 14-25. Tournament over - season over and unfortunately high school careers over for 6 young ladies who had played a game hard for many years and went out nearly on top...they didn't win it all but they made WHS history - and they set the tone for future Lady Crusaders to follow - and they did it all with smiles on their faces. Congratulations - it's been a fun ride all season and no doubt more good stuff lies ahead for the program - can't wait to see!!

The Lady Crusaders end their history-making season at 19-20. You won't be forgotten. KEEP SMILIN'!

HERE vs Mulvane
Friday, Oct. 23, 2015

The IRONDUKES after a see-saw battle Friday evening at Sellers Park vs Mulvane, came up on the short end after a 4th qtr flurry by the Wildcats who secured their first 2015 district playoff win, final score Mulvane 42 Wellington 30.

Mulvane jumped out on Wellington early but the IRONDUKESresponded in kind on a 1 yd. run by Connor Phelps and a 2 pt. conversion completion to Jared Shields from Cade Phelps to regain the lead 8-6. That lead wouldn't last long, the Wildcats scored again rather quickly and maintained the 13-8 margin through the 1st half. Wellington came out after the break, ready to play and with 3:00 left on the 3rd qtr clock, went up on the Wildcats again 14-13 on another 1 yd run by Connor Phelps - the 2 pt. conversion failed. Again, Mulvane would answer quickly (they had lots of big plays) and were back on top at the end of 3 qtrs 21-14.

Wellington responded very quickly at the beginning of the 4th,in fact, just 4 seconds in and regained the lead 22-21 on a 3 yd run by Connor Phelps. Phelps rushed for 134 yds on 22 carries and the 3 TD's - he passed the 1,000 yd. rushing mark for the season as well - after 8 games he has 1,100 yds total! The dam broke for Wellington after that and the Wildcats basically scored at will during the last 10 minutes of the game...Wellington was able to pull within 6 at the 1:09 mark but an onside kick attempt failed (although not by much - it was a good effort and good kick) and the Wildcats were able to seal the deal with another big play - when the clock hit :00 - it was Mulvane 42 Wellington 30.

In addition to the 134 yds rushing and 3 TD's by Connor Phelps,Chris Kop carried the ball 11 times for 27 yds and 1 TD, Logan Jones had 12 carries for 26 yds, Dylan Ferguson had 4 carries for 23 yds, Dylan Goodman 1 carry for 15 yds and QB Cade Phelps 6 carries for 11 yds. Cade and the IRONDUKES had their best passing game thus far this season. Cade completed 11 for 125 yds total. Connor Phelps caught 4 of those for 56 yds. Jared Shields snagged 4 as well for 51 yds including a beautiful one-handed 33 yd reception and Dylan Goodman pulled in 3 for 18 yds. Rushing (236 yds) and Passing (125 yds) combined, the IRONDUKES had 361 yds. total offense.

WMS 7/8 FOOTBALL
vs Mulvane (HERE)
Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015

2 Football Seasons ago, the now 8th grade boys (and 1 girl) were 0-0 as Knights as they began their remarkable journey through 2 seasons of Wellington Knight Football. They were never able to replace one of those original goose eggs (fortunately) as they ended their 2nd and final season at WMS Thursday night with a perfect 14-0 record over their two year run! PIONEER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS AGAIN!! Yep, that was league championship #2!! :)

Mulvane, 5-1 coming into the contest were never a threat and the invincible Knights were the total cause of that! Scoring a touchdown for the first time in his Knight career, Austin Soles, at the 6:15 mark of the 1st qtr. busted loose and with some mighty fine blockers leading the way, carried the pigskin for a 42 yd romp to get the Knights on the board and they never looked back. Isaac Hilt added the 2 pt conversion - it was 8-0 with more to come!

At the 7:06 mark of the 2nd qtr., QB Zander Vargas dropped back and connected on a 45 yd pass to teammate Silas Popplewell who took it to paydirt in strong fashion - Hunter Greenlee would add the "2" and with just a little over a quarter in the can, the Knights were up 16-00! The large crowd on hand was pumped (the ones sitting on the west side anyway) and everyone was starting to taste that "undefeated stew" simmering in the background for over 13 games now.

With :31 secs left to go in half number one, QB Zander Vargas ran it in from the 10 yd line for 6 - Isaac Hilt added his 2nd "2 pt conversion" of the evening and at the break - it twas KNIGHTS 24 MULVANE 00.

Halftime did nothing to slow the KNIGHTs journey towards perfection - with less a minute gone in the 3rd, Blake Rausch shot out of the backfield like a cannon ball and 60 yds later was making the scoreboard operator put up some more points! The 2 pt. conversion failed - the score was now 30-00 and the game well in hand.

The Coaching staff did some substituting, QB Vargas took a break and Billy Walker and others stepped up to run the show on the field for a while. The effort of all the KNIGHTS was amazing Thursday and amazing over the previous two seasons. Their determination to win has always been strong and that confidence shined brightly at Sellers Park on this last and final victory for the boys and the girl. As far as football goes, they are now technically CRUSADERS - 4 more years of running up and down the gridiron awaits them. As Coach Luke Smith told them after the game (to paraphrase) - "You're a special group of 28 that can go as far with this game as you decide you want to go...keep working hard, stay together and success can follow..."

Congratulations KNIGHTS - remember how it felt and work hard to make that "not" the last time you feel it! GREAT JOB!!
***
In the opener Thursday down at Sellers, the 7th grade Knights battled hard and gave Mulvane plenty to handle. I've watched this team since early in the season and there has been noticeable increase in their game abilities and their confidence. A tough group that is learning to battle harder and harder and it'll continue to improve for them as they now prepare for next season.

Talk about razzle-dazzle, the 7th grade Knights had several tricks up their sleeves Thursday - the younger Knights first got on the scoreboard after executing an awesome half-back pass for a 28 yd reception (and TD) to Trenton Bannister! Trace Rusk would add the 2 pt conversion. With more razzle-dazzle, on a punt fake and pass, Bannister scampered for another TD, this one 70 yds! Bradley Jones would add the "2". The Knights final score would come from Bradley Jones again, who ran it in from 1 yd out, 2 pt conversion failed and the eventual final score was Mulvane 30 Wellington 22.

A good battle by the KNIGHTS who end their season at 1-6.Congratulations to them on their efforts and noticeable improvements over the season!

WHS VARSITY FOOTBALL
vs Collegiate HERE (Homecoming)
Friday, Oct. 9, 2015

The Wellington Crusaders moved to 3-3 on the season Friday night at Sellers Park, falling short against now 6-0 Wichita Collegiate by the final score of 35-8. A late score by Junior running back Chris Kop (1 yd run) kept the goose egg out of business on the scoreboard for the Irondukes. Neither team chalked up excessive yardage. Despite the margin of victory, the Spartans generated only 311 yds of total offense. Unfortunately, a significant portion of that came on big pass plays or fumble recovery opportunities.

Down only 13-0 at halftime, the Irondukes sold the farm early in the 3rd quarter with a couple of miscues that would cost them dearly. A fumble near the goal line on the opening kickoff in the 3rd resulted in a Spartan TD. Their next possession would end the same way pulling out to a 28-00 lead early in the 3rd and relinquished little after that, minus the 1 yd TD run by Kop late in the game.

Kop rushed 18 times for 35 yds but teammate Connor Phelpswould be the larger workhorse carrying the ball 24 times for 92 yds total. Logan Jones had 13 carries for 24, QB Cade Phelps was 5 / -16 and Dylan Goodman carried the pigskin once for a negative gain of 1. In the passing department, QB Phelps connected on 3 of 7 for 48 yds total. Jared Shields snagged one for a 26 yd gain and Connor Phelps 2, for 22 yds total. Total offense for Wellington - 135 Rushing, 48 Passing = 183 total, again, vs Collegiate's 311.

Connor Phelps punted the ball 6 times for 160 yds (27 yd avg) and the Crusaders chalked up 11 first downs, most of those (9) in the 2nd half.

Monday, Oct. 5, 2015

Wellington mixed things around a bit at league in search of some wins for regional seedlings.

#1 singles Abby Lowe was the #6 seed and finished 6th overall going 1-2 on the day. She lost her opening match to Esau from Buhler, then beat Augusta. She fell to Conrad from Collegiate in her last match. Abby should be a top 10 seed at regionals coming up in Pratt.

#2 singles Mekenna Adams played her first match in two years at singles. Seeding didn't go well and Adams opened up with the #4 seed from McPherson and lost 6-2,6-4. She bounced back and beat El Dorado and Buhler to finish 5th. The problem with the seeding the McPherson girl beat the #1 seed 6-4,6-0, and the #2 seed 6-0,6-4 in the championship. Adams gave her the toughest match on the day in a first round matchup. It was tough seeding it I just thought the McPherson girl should have been the two or three seed.

#1 doubles Madi Lewellen & Dietra Sober were the sixth seed and gave McPherson a competitive match but came up short. They then beat Augusta 9-3, then played #4 seeded Circle and won 9-4. That last match was big as Circle is in our regionals. The pair finished fifth.

#2 doubles Madison Adams & Lexi Saffell were the only medalist on the day. They got the three seed and beat Circle, then lost to McPherson. In the finals they beat Winfield 6-2,6-2 good for third. These two did good they've never played together before.

Regionals are Friday and Saturday at Pratt.

Phelps went 1 for 3 passing, connecting on a 9 yarder with brother Connor. Up 27 at halftime, the Indians in their first two "touches" of the ball in the 3rd qtr. found paydirt. The deal was sealed. Connor Phelps punted 7 times for 193 yds (28 yd avg) and returned 4 kickoffs for 48 yds. total. Teammate Dylan Goodman returned 3 kickoffs for 39 yds. Injuries are a concern for Wellington - linebacker Lukas Soria suffered a possible arm fracture after hard contact on a punt return. Connor Burnett went down with at least a game-ending knee issue. Dylan Ferguson suffered what appeared to be a possible concussion. Future status not clear on these injuries or others at this juncture. Andale and Wellington both now stand at 3-2 on the season, each with one more game before district playoffs begin. Andale will host Mulvane this coming Friday, Wellington will host Collegiate.

WHS VARSITY FOOTBALL
HERE vs Circle
Friday, Sep. 18, 2015

It was a record tieing night for Wellington High School football Friday! Senior Remington Gilkey rushed for 206 yards on 7 carries, scoring "5" rushing TD's to tie the WHS record held by only "3" other Crusaders in the history of the school! Chris Chapin in 1968, Mike Herrington in 1979 and Richard Clift (twice) in 1995. On a side note, Chapin also holds the record for most TD's scored in a game (including receptions and rushing TD's, etc.) with "6".

Remington ran north and south all night with ease behind a very strong offensive line that helped launch his TD runs of 29, 47, 47, 35 and 34 yds. Gilkey was also on the receiving end of a Cade Phelps 16 yd. pass - with 3 defenders on him, Remington came down with the ball and advanced it for extra yardage. Overall, the IRONDUKES rushed for 434 yds, add the 16 yd pass and you have 450 yds of offensive production, the game was never in doubt. Wellington has an army of running backs this season, in addition to Gilkey's 206 yd contribution, 7 other Irondukes carried the pigskin with considerable success.Senior Connor Phelps, coming off a 198 yd evening vs Eisenhower last week, rushed for 104 yds this week on 17 carries. Connor also scored 2 TD's on 8 and 7 yd runs. Here's the rest of the yardage makers: Chris Kop 10 / 46 yds., Colton Glover 1 / 29 yds., Derek Driskell 3 / 23 yds., Dylan Goodman 2 / 14 yds., Logan Jones 1 / 10 yds.and QB Cade Phelps 1 / 2 yds.

The Crusaders will be on the road this coming Friday at Clearwater who lost to league opponent Mulvane 21-7. Then it's a trip to Andale and back home to host Collegiate on homecoming. Last night, Andale vs Collegiate went into OT after Andale had lead most if not all of the game. Down 45-44 after scoring in OT, the Indians went for "2" and didn't capitalize, losing by 1 to the now 3-0 Spartans. Andale drops to 1-2 on the season after losing to Buhler in week #1, 0-16.

Sep. 3, 2015

The Wellington Knights opened their season Thursday down at Sellers Park vs Haysville and ended up with a split. In 7th grade action, Haysville prevailed 28-0 with considerable size advantage and prowess. Bradley Jones #3, QB'd the 7th graders and strong performances also from Trenton Bannister #19 and Trace Rusk #24 who both carried the ball well. In the nightcap, the WMS 8th graders (last year's Pioneer League Champions) looked good overall, controlling the tempo of the game, despite the size of their opponent, with a couple hiccups in a strong 4 Qtr. for Haysville but in the end it was Wellington 28-16. Great play by QB Zander Vargas who got a lot of help from teammates Gage Cunningham #3, Silas Popplewell #7, Blake Rausch #9, Hunter Greenlee #32, Isaac Hilt #34 and Cade Fairbanks #17 or should we call him "HANDS" Fairbanks - Cade had 2 interceptions and at least 1 reception. Both lines contributed greatly to the outcome as well! It will be road trip time next Thursday as the Knights travel to Buhler to take on their counterparts at Prairie Hills MS. Football season is here!!
