The Wellington Crusaders traveled to Rose Hill to take on the Rockets last Friday, October 21 and came away with a convincing win. The Crusader offense started slowly, not scoring a point in the first quarter but they would get rolling with a 13-yard pass to Brody Weir to begin the second quarter. Rose Hill answered with a touchdown drive of their own to even the score at 7-7. Little did they know that would be their only score of the game. Wellington closed out the first half with a safety and another Kenny Redford touchdown pass to Brody Weir. The Crusaders continued to assert their dominance in the second half and shut out the Rose Hill Rockets to win the game 29-7.
Wellington’s defense played an amazing game and only allowed 164 total yards of total offense for the Rockets; Brody Weir, Carter Burnett, and Derrick Lowe all recovered fumbles; and Malachi Rogers got an interception. On the offensive side, Malachi Rogers continued his outstanding season with 152 rushing yards and a touchdown; Brody Weir broke out for a big game scoring two touchdowns on 3 receptions and 61 yards; and Riley Nichols added a rushing touchdown.
This was a fantastic way to end the regular season to make the Crusaders 5-3 and earn the 4-seed in the Kansas 4A State Playoffs. Let's hope the momentum carries over into the playoffs! Wellington will face off against the 13-seeded Winfield Vikings here at home on October 28.
GO BIG RED.
