Crusaders Fall to 0-2 / More Indians This Week
The Crusaders fall to 0-2 on the road at Andale. The Indians came out of the starting blocks with a 67 yd opening kickoff return for 6. The deal was sealed early. Andale was up 21-0 after 1. Final score WHS 7 AHS 35. WHS Jr. QB Berkeley Wright saw his first varsity action, beginning the 2nd qtr, completing 7 passes for 38 yds. Wright and the Crusaders wouldn't find paydirt until late in the 4th Qtr on a short scamper by Sr. running back Zander Vargas. Vargas carried the ball 19 times for 80 yds and the TD. Karsten Gill moved to 2/2 on season PAT's.
Earlier in the 4th qtr, Sr. fullback Isaac Hilt went down with a possible spinal cord concussion. It was decided by medical personnel and family on the field to transport Isaac via ambulance, for precautionary reasons, to Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Never take our emergency services for granted here in Wellington. No such services exist in Andale and numerous other communities, resulting in a 30 minute wait for the Sg. Co. ambulance to arrive. Reports later were positive, no fractures and other tests came back negative which was good. Hilt is scheduled to leave for the Navy in early June after graduation and then begin pre-navy seal training in August 2020.
The Crusaders return home this coming Friday and will host the Indians from Clearwater who pulled out a 13-12 squeaker over Mulvane, moving to 2-0 on the season after a 22-15 week #1 victory over Rose Hill. Rose Hill, like Wellington, fall to 0-2, after losing to Collegiate 34-14. Kickoff Friday will be at 7PM @ Sellers.
